Only modest auroral activity was expected this night, and so much greater was the surprise to realize that the camera had captured what appear to be 3 separate substorms in less than 3 hours (usually you'll be lucky to see one within 2 hours of the last). The onset of the last substorm (1:23) is...

This time lapse spans 2½ weeks of spring during which the snow melts and occasionally returns for a brief visit. Notice how nights get shorter; by the end there's only a couple of hours of darkness left, and in reality they are not quite dark as the camera makes them look.

A small strip of clear sky (as seen from Fairbanks - it has to be clear over a large area) along the eastern horizon is hidden by the hills, but allows the rising sun to shine under the cloud layer, resulting in spectacular colors.

An approaching shower looked interesting and led me to start the time lapse. Looking through it a couple of times I realize that a pattern of lake reflections are dancing around on the clouds just waiting to be noticed. A burst of orange/red colors marks the sunset.
