Jul 26, 2008 - It's great to see an accomplished academic take reggae seriously. Ed has obviously done his homework on the subject (except for one thing: "I'll Take You There" was actually influenced by "The Liquidator" by Harry J. Allstars - especially the note-for-note intro.) and he obviously has a great respect for the music. Anyone interested in the history of Jamaican music should read "Bass Culture" by Lloyd Bradley (it has also been published under a different name in the U.S., I believe).

dillikins Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - By all means, buy Ed's book (he deserves the support), but if you really want to learn how to play reggae bass, go out and buy all the Studio One records you can get your hands on (check the Heartbeat and Soul Jazz labels for re-releases) and listen.

Jul 26, 2008 - I'll take it a little further & recommend youbuy all his books & video's.I have all Ed'spublications with the exception of the UprightBass DVD.Anyone who is "self-motived" with afair amount of musical knowledge, can work thruhis books with relative ease. You can even askEd questions if you have some confusion on thematerial presented.Ed is a generous teacher &the contents of his books demonstrate thatfact!

Jul 26, 2008 - I agree, go out and listen to the music, don't just get it from my book (or any book). It also helps to get "in the spirit" of the music....
