Oct 11, 2008 - YEAH GO PALMER!!!i remember when i was in sinfonietta like 3-4 years back... loved the orchestra. the trips were fun; jim palmer is an awesome conductor. we met with great conductors too. made high school really fun.i always thought that the judges graded easy for us, but nah, we actually did really well. too bad i dont play in the orchestra anymore o_Oso if u wanna play well, move to chattahoochee high located in alpharetta lol.

Oct 11, 2008 - this is one of my favorite string orchestra works. i love how Bloch used a concerto grosso name for it. i actually just completed composing the first three movements of my first Concerto Grosso and i'm planning on writing second Concerto grosso inspired by this one.

Oct 11, 2008 - well that's becuase Bloch based this concerto on the baroque style Concerto called the Concerto grosso (italian for Large Ensemble). As opposed to the Concerto we know today as the Concerto for Soloist and Orchestra accompaniment, the Concerto Grosso was work for a Small Ensemble of soloists (the concertino) against a larger orchestra (the ripieno). Sometimes the concertino would play with the ripieno in the background and sometimes they'd all play together.

Oct 11, 2008 - and further more, Bloch titled this movement Prelude cuz it's simply a movement for the entire orchestra to set the mood of the rest of the piece. The small ensemble actually comes into play during the rest of the work. But you know many contemporary composers such a Bartok wrote Concertos for orchestra without having any soloist. the word concerto literally means Ensemble or together so it doesn't always mean a work for solist and orchestra. That's just the standard musical definition.
