Oct 11, 2008 - Yes, we were there to show off the different AR platforms and versatility. Not to show accuracy or distance.

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - The Barrett M468 is off list and available to Californians. The upper is available separate at the time in 2007. They are no longer available.

hatrixz Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - ya but its not a long range bullet, its more of a standoff round, if u want rang go with the 308 but at less tha 50 yards i would want beowulf for sheer power and stopping ability

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Isn't the 50 Beowulf being used by the US Coast Guard ? I heard that they were using M4 rifles chambered for that 1/2 inch round.

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Now a civilian version called the REC7 is out for 6.8mm SPC shooters!

stg2ahn Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - does the beowulf have detachable magazines? I would think it is ok in CA because no 10+ rd mags exist for them.

philyfred Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Is 6.8 ammo more expensive than 5.56? Do rifles come already chambered in 6.8 or do you need to buy a conversion kit?

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Yes 6.8mm is more expensive than 5.56mm. The rifles need a complete new top end (upper half) chambered for the 6.8mm and a 6.8mm magazine.

rigoletto68 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - For civilian defense would you say the 308? Thanks.

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Yes the 308 cartridge is more formidable in energy and downrange velocity over the 5.56mm, 6.8mm and .50Beowulf. .308 or 7.62x51mm was the preferred cartridge in the Vietnam War when the soldiers dumped their M16 and grabbed M14 because of the reliability and vegetation to punch thru.

COLUMBINE1818 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - In your professional opinion, do you reccomend that the US military switches from the 5.56 to the 6.8 round?

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Using the same AR15 platform, the 6.8mm has a better terminal ballistic and has the further potential for more efficient and better stopping power ammunition. Currently for the 6.8mm there are only 95-115gr ammunition while the 5.56mm has the advantage of a wider range of ammunition: 40gr - 80gr.However the military expense to switch out all M4 & M16 rifles with a 6.8mm upper, magazines, and ammunition plus the retraining would be cost prohibitive.

FNSCAR0890 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Just so you know hatrixz the Beowulf is good out to 200yds.

FNSCAR0890 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Beowulf is the obvious winner here for CQB. 6.8 SPC and .308 will essentially do the same amount of damage. 6.8 and .308 are only ballistically superior from ranges around 400yds. The .50 Beowulf solves the over penetration problem the .308 and 6.8 have created. If the military would let me I'd bring a Beowulf upper with me overseas =]

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - So is it true that the US Coast Guard uses the .50 Beowulf ?

FNSCAR0890 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - On record..Onlt the US Army and USMC have used M4s configured for the .50 Beowulf. Although I have Coast Guard friends up here in Maine who say that in places like the Floridian coast that they have used some Beowulf uppers to take out boat engines on drug smugglers and Cuban political refugees. It's still not a part of the official US Military armament though. Just a treat.

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Thanks for the clarification. Helps a lot!

Aperson156 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Yes, but the problem with the beowulf is the fact that it only holds 7 rounds of ammo per clip. have fun reloading ~3 times while the guy with the 6.8 is still hammering away at you. And with the 223 it will be 4 times.

Aperson156 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - The problem with the beowulf is capacity, you would have to reload about 3 times per clip of 6.8, and nearly 4 times per .223/5.56

metroshot Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Yes the capacity is a lot less as the round occupies the entire width of the magazine. Guess you can use a Beta Co drum magazine and get about 50 rounds in it! Anyone try it ?

Aperson156 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - (I am sorry 'bout the double post btw.)Sounds fun, you should do it :P

Salemlax22 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - 6.5 Grendel, problem solved

battl3fr0nt Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - The 50. it good for anything under about 150 yards.. the 6.8 is a good round for anything under 300 yards.. and the 308 is good to 1000m-1200m it is a sniper round.. the best round that is out now for an AR is the 6.5 its good for CQB (better then the 6.8) and it will get you out to 1400 yards with a 24 bareel and an easy 1000m with a 16" barrel.. The military is going with the 6.8 for the most part but it is pretty stupid when the 6.5 is a much better round for just about anything...

Salemlax22 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - I wouldn't fail to mention the 6.5 grendel which has better proven terminal ballistics and more everything in general when compared to the 6.8mm. The grendel utilizes the 6.5mm bullets which can be loaded as low as 85gr to 140gr. I do agree that the expense to switch calibers would be expensive, but it could be worth it in the end

PORSCHE951928 Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Less Capacity but it only takes one hit & it's all over. It's the baddest hunting rig ever, I have shot 3 big hogs 1 deer and a coyote and they all went down with one shot. Never even flinched an ear. My buddy shot a little pig w/ a .223, hit it 2 times & we chased that bastard for an hour before we got it. My friend bought the Beowulf the very next day and will never hunt w/ a .223 again
