Aug 20, 2008 - He left out Woody's most affirming verse:Nobody livingCan ever stop meAs I go walkingThat freedom highwayNobody livingCan make me turn backThis land was made for you and me.

Aug 20, 2008 - Like I said, the reality here is different than the reality over there. That's it.My comment was certainly NOT meant to be an insult.I'm saying maybe you should find another term to define the rich than 'white collar'. I'm technically a 'white collar' worker, and I bust my butt at my computer 60+ hours a week to make sure my kids have heat during the winter and good food to eat. They 'job pay' comment meant that you deserve the same pay our President gets (a LOT more).
ArmyGirl81 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - You might want to re read my comment !! I said NOTHING about WHITE COLLAR originally , i said the RICH MAN !! Never said anything about WHITE COLLAR !! What status you hold doesn't mean shit to me , its about character for me. And my whole point was that RICH people like George Bush , Donald Trump and The Rockefellers and many many more , are out of touch with REALITY !! They use money and power to fuck people over!!

Aug 20, 2008 - Why all the hate? What about the illegal immigrants coming into our country that are f-ing us over? How much money you have doesn't mean you are a bad or good person, they're totally independent of each other. Are you saying they are worse people because they use money instead of a gun to hold up a 7-11? Or that they hire someone to sleep with them instead their wives half-sister?How is George Bush using his power to f- people over? Do you REALLY think he makes any of the decisions?
ArmyGirl81 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - I don't hate anyone i am just telling you what i think is wrong with the way things are in the world from the things i have seen and the information that i have given to me. And i know we need immigration reform , no one seems to have a solution to the problem. And yes Bush makes decisions why do you think him and his father wanted to be president?.If there is one single person on this planet who has any influence or power in the world its the president of the USA Democrat or Republican!!

Aug 20, 2008 - Does anyone know where I can find an MP3 for this version, I downloaded from iTunes the version that was on his live CD, but I like this one better, but I can't find its MP3
Arenlor Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - That's because he was criticizing America, just like his song Born in the USA
auroradawn23 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Dan, yes, I imagine it "could" be about anywhere, but it's not. The very American Guthrie wrote it about America. Hence the references to "From California, to the New York Island - From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters." Given that those places are in the States obviously he was writing about his own nation. It was about the Great Depression and how Americans needed to realize that this was "our land" and that we needed to take it back. I'm glad you can relate to the song, though.
auroradawn23 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - You have to love Bruce. Here's a decent man with genuine talent and a huge heart.
DANxCHORIN Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - I don't understand how it relates to the American 'dream' though...
auroradawn23 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Dan, I don't know that it refers to the so-called "American Dream" so much as it does to one American's dream -- Woody Guthrie's -- that we would reclaim "our land."
DANxCHORIN Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Ah, I confused you with a person that said this song was about the "American Dream'.
kickar Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - "The American people made their choice long ago. Their blood and their sacrifice is secured to us the basic human rights: Life, liberty and the pursuit of hapiness....."
ramooie Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - I once saw a TV documentary that said Guthrie wrote this to protest the type of patriotism being buoyed in his day by Kate Smith's "God Bless America" as its most rousing anthem. The rightwing mindset of that time that held strikers, unionizers, racial integrationists, civil rights enthusiasts, minimum wage-ites as un=American, the problem with America, not part of the solution to what our country needs.

XVbackthree Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - It relates to the 'American dream' insofar as one of this country's most cherished ideals is the elusive promise of freedom for everyone - a land where no one is exploited or oppressed. Liberty in its purest and truest form.
DANxCHORIN Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - I would call that the dream of humanity... Not the dream of a specific country.
