May 14, 2008 - The album "Giant Steps", which this was on, came out in 1973, if that helps at all.
generalbullmoose Says:
May 14, 2008 - Dadgum, that is Lyle!
kornfedboy Says:
May 14, 2008 - That looks like Lyle Mayes on keyboards??!!?during the piano solo, but also at about 3:14 he throws his head/hair back. Wow!
bwvbach Says:
May 14, 2008 - 0:56 nice trumpet screams the maynard verisoin in my opinion is better but this one is one of the best ive heard in a long time wow they are MUSIC STEROIDS
flatbouy Says:
May 14, 2008 - Lyle Mays (lots with Pat Metheny) playing the Fender Rhodes, baby, ya! Groovy baby, ya! That must have been just after he graduated NTS 1 O'clock band. The drummer ain't bad, neither.
flatbouy Says:
May 14, 2008 - On YouTube, of course!
MSmithjazz Says:
May 14, 2008 - Lyle Mays started with this band in 1975. That gives you an idea when these programs were broadcast. By the time Woody Herman staged his 40th year concert in 1976, Mays was already gone and replaced by his successor in the NTSU 1 O' Clock Pat Coil. My guess is summer of 75.

vcbaseball6 Says:
May 14, 2008 - haha man i love how you'd scream over the end of the form and then just let ur horn flop in the "that's right... i can play higher than you" fashion...the band BURNS on this one
bigpapi1952 Says:
May 14, 2008 - Yo, I grew up watching the 'moves' of Maynard, Doc, Hubbard, etc - so I needed to have me some 'moves' too, didn't I? But moves ALWAYS need the backup of quality performance - plus, the babes DIG the moves!LOL
vcbaseball6 Says:
May 14, 2008 - Yeah, so true about the babes... hahaha and yeah you can only really pull off the "moves" if you can back it up w/ a high B or whatever... i guess you pulled it off :) haha nice
bigpapi1952 Says:
May 14, 2008 - REMEMBER, not just a high B - a high B in the right place and not as a wrong note at the end of a well-played chart!HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
vcbaseball6 Says:
May 14, 2008 - Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you as well sir! :)
JTheronDrake Says:
May 14, 2008 - Got to reintroduce the bass trombonist to the band here last night. He kept warning me "My solo is coming up. Get ready. Get ready. Here it comes... now!"Vaughn hadn't developed his "move" yet.
bigpapi1952 Says:
May 14, 2008 - Vaughn is one in a million - knowing him enriches our lives...

May 14, 2008 - who is the drummer . it must be right after ed soph . soph played this great on the giant steps album . this is not ed soph but he plays this tune well. Soph was awesome the giant steps album with those incredible dancing feet of his check that album out. this band band must be after soph it cooks though i think andy laverne played piano on the album. who is this rhythm section. rummers .
chuckkenn Says:
May 14, 2008 - this band is so hot woody is amazed . the best band ever . they could play any style great. woody was tough on drummers. woody at his best ultra modern. but who is this drummer. they changed the ending slightly from the giant steps album. lyle mays is a genious. i wish woody and this band were still out there. today . we have got to bring this sound back for the future instead of vidieo games. keep live jazz alive!!!
bigpapi1952 Says:
May 14, 2008 - the drummer, under all that hair is the 'pre-Brad Pitt-handsome' STEVE HOUGHTON, a fab drummer and super nice guy.....
chuckkenn Says:
May 14, 2008 - i would have never guessed that was steve houghton. a good drummer . i wonder who playedthis first ed soph or steve. it seems woody had a different north texas drummer every year in 70-80s. a hard chart to get play . this cooks. they should be proud its timeless. soph had a few more intricate feet patterns though. wow what a band!!
trommeaxen Says:

clskmstg Says:
May 14, 2008 - I love the "peace" signs on the tenor sax strap! haha... This was probably WH's best group. If you're lucky enough to have the "La Fiesta" album - it's one to cherish!
