Have you ever wondered what is under the streets of New York City? Well I recently took a tour to find out. The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is the oldest subway tunnel in the world, but somehow got lost for over 50 years until it was rediscovered in 1980. It is over 2,000 feet long and is wide enough for two steam locomotives to ride side by side.

Oct 13, 2008 - nice video, but the first subway tunnel (that actually formed a subway) was in London - this was just an ordinary tunnel that happened to go under a city, there were no stations etc

Oct 13, 2008 - Actually, when this tunnel was first made it was specifically a train tunnel and included a train stop. Later one of the tracks was taken out and it served as a rail tunnel/road.

Oct 13, 2008 - Erin,This tour looks fantastic! I hope one day when i travel back to the states to visit my family that I can take a tour of the tunnel as well. I am glad you and morgan had fun. I looked at their site and they wrote that people should not wear high-helled shoes. Most likely that means someone has! He he. Peace and Love,Diana
