saleemds Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Thanks a lot ..
Azorean2100 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - No, after gromyko, theres someone else (dunno who is) then its gorbachev.
Azorean2100 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - andropov was already clearly a sicken man.
Azorean2100 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - look, at 3:35, yasser arafat at the bottom right. I guess he and brejnev were good buddys...
z12z3 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Arafat's adventures was financed by all these buddies
Zenekar Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - "Партия с глубоким прискорбием сообщает, что вчера, после долгой и продолжительной болезни, не приходя в сознание, приступил к своим обязанностям Леонид Ильич Брежнев.

Nov 18, 2008 - first funeral of a soviet gensek since 1953. very interesting.
GlalaxyBoy Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Andropov was in very ill health his entire time in power. He was mentally sharper than Brezhnev however. Also he was a former KGB chief.
bjr43 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Didn't Ustinov and someone else give eulogies too?
Ferrim Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Does someone know the title, composer or something about the funeral music which sounds from 6:08, while they are carrying Brezhnev's corpse to the tomb, before the Soviet anthem?
GlalaxyBoy Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Andropov, Brezhnev's successor, was probably one of the most innately intelligent "elder" Soviet leaders. He was a former KGB chief and would probably have done more to try & fight corruption had he survived longer. He was so ill that he barely appeared in public during his reign.
GlalaxyBoy Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - In addition, throughout 1983, under Andropov, US/Soviet relations sank to their lowest point since the Cuban Missile crisis. The USA's stationing of Pershing missiles in western Europe and the Soviets' downing of the KAL007 passenger jet caused fears of all-out nuclear war to resurface in late 1983. How much Andropov was truly in control would be interesting to know...
Dogapsa Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - How much ANY Soviet leader was actually running the show would be interesting to know. I personally believe all countries are run by a cadre of elite powers that cooperate across borders. It MUST be this way, lest the nuclear hell be unleashed. Just think about one example of this being true: nuclear missile equipment. There is no way Soviet technology controlled the Soviet silo. US elites helped 'em build safe silos to keep erroneous launches from happening.
Dogapsa Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - I think that's from the original Star Trek.
Efendi683 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - I don't think you give Russian (Soviet) technology its due credit. Regardless of what was going on with the consumer economy the military industrial complex was just as capable if not more so in some areas as the United States.
Dogapsa Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - That's probably true. It's amazing what one can do when he has a gun pointed at his temple.
Efendi683 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Perhaps, but regardless of what may have or did happen in the Soviet Union it was much better then anything after 1991.
newtroublemaker1973 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - If Andropov had lived longer I doubt that Gorbachev would have come to power and the Soviet Union would have collapsed.
rupertopesto Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - It is great TV material, although I don't understand a thing... can please someone can tell me what is Andropov saying?
abo2870 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - What could he possibly say? He praises Brezhnev: he was a great leader, great communist etc. I don't understand Russian either, only a few words. But I lived in a communist country and I know the "pattern" of these speeches.
rupertopesto Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Thank you very much abo!
markkufinn Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - You're joking, their technology always lost to ours in head to head combat.
