Jul 26, 2008 - with the sliding of the foot, are my shoes a factor? how about throne height?

daveclarkdrums Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - I'll see how I go.

daveclarkdrums Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - I recommend thin soled shoes - nothing heavy. Shoes that allow you to "feel" the movement of the pedal. As far as Throne height - make sure your legs are just above 90 degrees - not too high though.

ModernDrummer1234567 Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - There are three different pedal techniques. The heel down method. The heel up and also the suspended method. The heel down method limits your ankle movement. Now I don't think there is anything rong with that when your playing slow and soft. When I am playing soft my heels can drop.Howerver you have to keep you heels up in order to play efficently, otherwise your wasting energy with a flawed technique.

ModernDrummer1234567 Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - The suspended Method is the one that I use because the beater can then bounce back freely. With the suspended method all your leg weight is balenced and this makes it much easier.I guess what you ment by neither of them are more correct{Heel up or down}Is because they both come in handy for different Tempos.Obviously you technique changes when you play fast then when you play slow. For example you obviously would not use the heels down method for a fast double bass phrase.

Jul 26, 2008 - I know it is beside the point but what kind of snare microphone do you use?

daveclarkdrums Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - The snare mic is a Shure Beta 57A. Toms are Shure SM57, kick is Sennheiser e602 and overheads are AKG - can't recall model as I borrowed them.Cheers.

ddrruummmmaann Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - Alright thanks!Very good video too.

Maidenfreak29 Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - Im new to drums how do you muffle your bass drum

daveclarkdrums Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - There are several theories on this. I don't muffle my bass drum much at all - I just have an old jumper in mine. Some people put Blankets or a pillow in there. Firstly, I would recommend a good bass drum head - I use a Remo Powerstroke 3. The Evans EMAD is good, particularly for cheaper sets.

Jul 26, 2008 - I GOT A QUESTION!!! You said that the throne-height should be 90 degrees, and I sit FAAAR higher than that...I have seen that Mike Portnoy sits so high, so it looks almost like he´s standing up, especially in he´s younger days...I´ve improved my bassdrum-teqnic ALOT, thanks to my higher seat....IS IT REALLY SO WRONG? If even Mike has he´s throne like that...

daveclarkdrums Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - Nothing is really wrong as long as it works for you. I should've said "anything above 90 degrees". I just see a lot of kids sitting too low and they can't work out why their whole kick technique doesn't work, so I go with the "just above 90" advice.

888erkan888 Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - yeah ok thanks for the answer!!You should check out Mike´s throne heigt...you will problably even laugh at hes EXTREME high throne..Search for "DREAM THEATER SCENES OVERTURE"You get a vid from 2001, after this Mike began so lower the throne a little. To quote him "I been trying to lower my seat for years"By the way, Dream Theater is the best band in the WORLD!!!

Jul 26, 2008 - G'day. As mentioned in the info, I'm from Australia. I'm glad you find my accent cute because I can't help but speak this way!

jlausen Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - This is great, man. It's 1AM here, but later today I will defintely try this stuff out. My biggest thing is laying on the bass drum with the beater like you showed..and is there any way to get a better tone from my bass drum? Its always either too muffled or too dull- I have a teflon/kevlar pad on the head and its sounded bad since I put it on.

daveclarkdrums Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - As with many aspects of drumming, the "beater off the head" method is open to debate. The tone of your bass drum depends on the actual drum plus the head choice. I have the same pad on my kick which is a 22" x 18" Pearl BRX with a Powerstroke 3 head. It seems that higher end kits respond better to medium thickness heads, where cheaper kits sound better with heavier heads such as the eMad.
