The Engineer's Plot:"The revolutionaries who toppled the Tsar in 1917 thought science held the key to their new world. In fact, it ended up creating a bewildering world for millions of Soviet people. In this light-hearted investigation, one industrial planner tells how she decided the people wanted platform shoes, only to discover that they had gone out of fashion by the time that the factory to manufacture them had been built.

Jul 26, 2008 - This just proves that although humans individuals "can be rational". Groups of people are always irrational. This is where the negative term "Mob Rule" comes in and expresses itself as the lowest common denominator. You know the story where a couple of idiots get violet in a protest and then the cops take over with guns and chemical warfare? Socialism always tries to take away free will! Where capitalism only tries to control free will!
waterboi74 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - I agree with most of what you said but one thing most people mix up is that capitalism is a economic system and democracy is a political system. I agree that a country that leans to far to the left tends to take some freedoms away. I think the best system is one that finds a balance between the two.

Jul 26, 2008 - Well, I'm Russian(former Soviet -))))who was born in 1975th, not so far from Magnitka. Guess, what? Today only I discovered that this famous city, which was the one of strongest examples of proud for Soviet government - is just a copy of Gary,Indiana! The funny news to know! Talking in general, the movie is truthful. An ephisode from the bruch factory is most ironical and significant description of that absurds socially industrial life. Probably, the author wasn't even understand that...

Jul 26, 2008 - I love the idea of soviet Russia having a government plan for 'required number of platform shoes'.

Jul 26, 2008 - Balance between what poles? Keep in mind you introduced two axes to work along—political and social.Personally, I'm a fan of laissez-faire capitalism and multi-party democratic minarchies.

Jul 26, 2008 - What a nightmare.
waterboi74 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - I totally agree with your "laissez-faire" opinion but unfortunately it only works if all dealings are honest. Example, China keeping their currency weak. And the way to counter this is by putting tariffs on imports coming in. Anyother example is the USA adding tariffs on Canadian lumber because, at the time, the Canadian dollar was worth a lot less (not any more). :) I'm Canadian btw...
GBanville Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - You make an interesting observation. Perhaps you would be interested in knowing that the economist Friedrich Hayek is known to have said that capitalism is the only economic system; what we think of as others, socialism, communism, fascism, are all political systems.Indeed, even the term capitalism was only formed as a reaction to Marx. Before him, it was simply the market.
GBanville Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Surely, you are aware that the strength of the Canadian dollar vs the US dollar has more to do with the US dollar's weakness than the Canadian dollar's strength? In fact, I've always been told (my family came to the US from Ca) that the Ca dollar was weaker deliberately, for some kind of gain in exchanges. And the US dollar is weak precisely because we have a currency managed by a central bank. This is not even close to a laissez-faire economy.
GBanville Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - I think it was at this point, just before the video ends, when computers were being used in the hope they could make economic planning possible that the Soviet philosophy began to slump before the challenge of Friedrich Hayek, that the price system conveying information to diffuse decision-makers would always be superior to their vision of a planned economy.
waterboi74 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - I wouldn't say Canada deliberately keeps the dollar low but I would say that their is some agreement between all memebers of IMF, even though IMF's purpose was supposed to be to keep the "market" free. The weaker Canadian dollar helps both Canada and the USA. We sell more for less and the USA can buy more for less. Canada exports and the USA imports.
GBanville Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Fair enough. I was 15 last time I visited Canada, and don't know everything about the relations between the countries.
umageddon Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Canada has a cnetral bank as well. The Bank of Canada.
GBanville Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - So do lots of countries. And the same thing usually happens to them all sooner or later-just not always at the same time.

lettucemonster Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Hayek was a moron who talked about computation without understanding it. As this film shows, Soviet planning was idiotic but whatever could be computed by the market could also be theoretically computed by a planning agency/computer. The failures of Soviet planning do not disprove socialism any more than a place crash disproves aviation.
hypnofan35 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - There is one thing that never has changed and never will change. Loyalty, Hierarchy, and adversity toward outsiders an inferiors. These things make for a world with slaves and slave masters and wars where people who don't know one another are killing one another for "reasons" that seem to be controlled by a "not us" mandate. The only thing that will cure this is to make rich people broke and powerful people into gutter dwellers. Maybe one every two years would do it. Four years is way to long.
