Aug 21, 2008 - I can listen to Gould play Bach all day, but he's a bit stiff on the Beethoven, I prefer Van Cliburn. Just different interpretations I suppose, it's just the way I hear it.

Aug 21, 2008 - in my opinion gould is the greatest pianist when he plays Bach, but he can not play beethoven well. I don't like this performance; director is not good too

Aug 21, 2008 - I think Gould fits Beethoven well in the same way he does with Bach. Probably due to the fact that the two composed very linear...almost mathmatical works, which was the way that G. Gould saw the keyboard I think...I could be wrong heh. The ONLY difference I see with Bach and Beethoven is, Bach very contained and restriced and Beethoven isnt. Bach= Old Testament Beethoven= New Testament.
mizukahosen Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - Well, there are actually quite a few differences between Bach and Beethoven. One major thing is that Bach uses a polyphonic contrapuntal texture which is what Gould specializes in. Beethoven, on the other hand, likes to use a homophonic melody-accompaniment style. This is the big difference. Also, as you said, Bach is contained because of the "doctrine of affections" idea. Beethoven however (especially during the time that he wrote this piece) uses explosive accents and very dramatic elements.
