The late, great John Entwistle playing bass with the Who. This clip has him isolated, visually, and audibly. The shear power of his style is obvious. From the movie, "The Kids Are Alright", recorded at Shepperton Film Studios, Middlesex, May 25, 1978. ATTENTION: THERE IS NO AUDIO UNTIL ENTWISTLE STARTS PLAYING.

Jul 26, 2008 - John Entwistle is/was a GREAT bass player. The reason no-one covered "THE WHO" is because Fans of the WHO could barely play with themselves let alone an Instrument...Nuff Said..(TIC) Tongue In Cheek Guys...

Jul 26, 2008 - You know It's really funny to see pete jump past John and do his power slide. I've seen the special edition recut. All of the people climb onto the stage and Hug Roger Peter and Keith, But, not john, John was ignored and If i had been there I would not only have hugged The Ox but, I would have begged him on my knees to give me a lesson

TomRaymondUK Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - Townshend said recently that the Ox's bass playing was like a Bach organ, which makes some sense when you think about it. He was a combination bassist, keyboard player and lead guitarist all in one. The only bassist to even approach what JE was doing in the 1960s was Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane. Even Cream's Jack Bruce had a fairly static technique in comparison.

Jul 26, 2008 - Good one!

mcul2112 Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - That's really interesting. I know JE refered to his bass tendencies as being influenced by the French horn,(that he played.) Funny thing is I've heard really cool French horn parts! Sometimes they'd stick out in the odd song...like off TV or whatever. Anyway...fwiw.

drummer78 Says:

Jul 26, 2008 - I saw Entwistle play a club in Providence called Lupo's back around 1996. He played with as much volume and power as if he was at the Isle of Wight. One can't really comprehend how loud it was unless you experienced an Entwistle solo show up close. His solo on Shakin' All Over was so scary good. My mind was blown. I saw "The Who" without the Ox. As good as those shows were it was missing the big spidery sound. I am kicking myself that I didn't see that 2000 incarnation of The Who.

Jul 26, 2008 - It just so amazing how John can take such a simple basic rock song, use basic bass lines with so much flair and come up with such fantastic bass playing. John was a fantastic bass player since the early 60s when he first started playing! One of the best of the best of all rock bass players!
