Aug 20, 2008 - Moser rode an aero machine to break the record. Merckx always had great contempt for Moser as he fely a weaker man should never have the record. Recall that Eddy did this at Mexico city, made his own mask to mimic the lower oxygen content at Mexico city and trained specifically to do this.

Aug 20, 2008 - Remarkable form and control. Note his upper body is steady at the max rpm. Imagine the power he could generate and yet still maintain form.I do not see that his form was compact. I think he had nean perfecty form. Do we have a date on this video? ~1970n Eddy broke his leg and his form did change a bit.

Aug 20, 2008 - wow. What gear ratio is he pedaling in? lol, if i ever tried to spin that fast, i would go right off the back of the rollers. :P
dmanlord Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - fast Eddy ... i wonder if Eddy doped during his career. When he was riding steroids and amphetamines had long been developed, and looking at pictures of him he seems to have that macromegaly or 'Andre the Giant' look in some photos ... the pronounced forehead, 'mono' eyebrow ...
dmanlord Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - what's up with the Hour Record these days ??? last I heard regulations had been set, if you want to try to beat it you have to use a non-aero bike, the type Eddy Merckz usedi believe Moser, Obree, Boardman, Indurain, Rominger beat it using aero machines but they were wiped from the record booksbut Boardman still beat the record (albeit by only a little) using a Merckz style bikewhy doesn't Armstrong go after it ????
Penalist Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Moser, Obree, Boardman, Indurain, Rominger are now put in the category of 'best hour performance'.And although Boardman indeed has the hour record, he did have the advantage of more aerodynamic clothing and helmet. Still, an enormous achievement.
dmanlord Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - so why doesn't Armstrong go after it ??
zenmachinefilms Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Actually, it was Orbee, then Boardman beat Moser's record. But yes, Mig beat them both.
zenmachinefilms Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - You left out Eddy's Vuelta win. Eddy also won a heap of classics and many other races.
Penalist Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - My guess is that he has had his share of training and performing. I think he would be up to the task, but it wouldn't be an easy assignment for Armstrong, too much to try it.
DamianoCunegodagreat Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Armstonr doesnt go after it cos he wouldnt break it!He hasnt raced for 2 years!!
bikerdude5580 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Judging that Armstrong never rode on the track then yeah he would get his ass beat. Plus armstrong only did things that would help with the tour and so this would be totally out of line for him
countnothing Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - He was DQ from the 1969 Giro for doping, actually. It was quite a scandal. He protests his innocence to this day.
houdini69 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - i remember merckx was devastated after being accused, i dont reckon he did ! some guys wouldnt touch anything , because its plain cheating end of story, cheats never win and winners never cheat.
boxsterwelby Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - It's all science, theoretically Armstrong would break the record. Track experience would help, but the fastest cyclist would still triumph. He isn't interested in competing anymore. He used his prime to win the tour 7 times.
steveparkes Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - because Armstrong probably wouldnt' have broken it at his peak. What you are forgetting is that Armstrong had one aim each year (post cancer anyway) to win the Tour you can't do that and break a record people suggest takes years from your life.Boardmans last 'athletes hour' was after he had hung up his road riding helmet.
patticusmaximus Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - This Merckx vs. Armstrong thing is dumb. Nobody on this damn page posting comments can ride like either of them. Lets just agree to disagree and realize that they are both amazing cyclists that inspire thousands of people every day to get out and ride.
damwthomas123 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Don't even try to compaire does two!Eddy Merckx is WAAAY better!Eddy won 5 times the toure the france and Armstrong 7 times .But what youre all forget is the the tour the france was the only fucking thing armstrong rode and his team did all the work. Eddy didn't need his whole team to win! + he has won everything in his life except a few races.Soo 1 eddy = 100x armstrong
dmanlord Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - yeah but with Armstrong it was all about dope, he was on a very good doping program ... without the dope he would hardly have been impressivehe admitted it to former teammate Floyd Landis .. he took EPO, testosterone, cortisone, etc. that's the crazy thing about the sport .. some cyclists there's evidence against them and nothing is done, others like Rasmussen there's no evidence and they are kicked out based on suspicion
macdonaldjohnd Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - That hour record ride he did was awesome, who here can even cover 29 mi on that track, even if it was wood, and at altitude. He was like an over ambitious kid, and must have burned himself into the ground, he needed a coach and mentor throughout his career.
willhilsman Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - they are both great. Its always difficult to compare athletes from different eras. Merckx's versatility is remarkable. When he would enter races. Merckx would win more often then he wouldn't win. In other words he had more 1st place finishes then 2nd-last place finishes. TDF 5x. Giro 5x. Vuelta 1x. Worlds 3x. Roubaix 3x. Liege 5x. Milan Sanremo 7x. He won over 500 races in his career. In some of his tours he won both the yellow and the green jersey. Its like if armstrong beat boonen for green.
ajn198 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Go Cadel!!!
ellochaps12 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Both are great cyclist and friends. If they respect each other then who the hell do you think you are to compare them?
whitbywv Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - If you have to be a pro to comment on a pro, then why have a sport. All ther cyclists here are great and the sport gives great desire to push yourself.I detest folks who come off like oh, you dont know so, you cant comment. Bag it sonny. I cycled 20+ years and know enough to know they are all great cyclists.I see no mention of Coppi or Antiquel or Hinault or Van Impe or Major Tom and hey, I respect what I am reading. Its a shame to read keyboard courage on a video of a great cylist.
dmanlord Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - come to think of it, if you consider "Grand Tour" wins as the basis for supremacy instead of just the Tour de France, Indurain was also better than Lance ArmstrongIndurain won the Tour 5 times and the Giro d'Italia twice which would give him 7 grand tour wins ... this would tie LanceBut Indurain also won Olympic Gold in the ITT in Atlanta by beating, among other people, Lance Armstrong himself (he actually beat him by several minutes), and Miguel also broke Moser's hour record.
