Aug 20, 2008 - Very well put together, very moving, great song and really makes you think about the waste of young lives for political and economic gain.I first heard this in 1971 and it has never left my memory, today I understand why.Imagine this playing whilst M*A*S*H is having one of it's blacker storylines, or during the closing scene in Blackadder goes forth, Goodbyeee. Highly focussing stuff.Hope the 16-24 year olds are open to this old but very relevant masterpiece.Well done Rev.

Aug 20, 2008 - Well said. I was very little when this song came out but can appreciate it. I loved it before the war of today. I thought of the Vietnam Vets when I listened to it back in the 80's. It is relevant today again...unfortunately.

Aug 20, 2008 - As an American, I will never lose my pride. If I lose my pride, it would be a slap in the face to all of those who gave up their lives during the wars. Regardless of how this war was started, I must keep my pride for them.

edburns123 Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - The people who died KNOW NOTHING! They are dead! The best thing you can do for them is overcome your foolish pride and demand an end to war so others won't die for nothing like those who already died in war.

Morr40 Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - I am so sorry, I am crying right now.

MoHMoHMoHMoHMoHMoH Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - thats why you should blame the goverment, they are the real cowards, strongest man die first.. weakest die last... because strongest are on frontlines.. and us goverment is nothing but a pussy killing own soldiers in war for oil... GOOD AMERICANS ARE DYING FOR OIL... STOP PAYING BLACK GOLD WITH HUMAN LIVES! FOR FEW GOOD MAN, FOR THE STRONGEST ON THE FRONTLINES!!!

MoHMoHMoHMoHMoHMoH Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - thats the kind of pride us is based on, and because of people who dont care for such values america is going the wrong way... in the materialistic world idealism has no place and that is a very bad thing my friend... stop the civil wars, for all men are nothing but brothers...

Aug 20, 2008 - Love and Respect to ALL Vets of any of our wars! Wouldn't have a country without Vets! Its a shame that they had to go to war, but once they were called for duty they showed their golden colors. Many thanks to them!

butterworthpa Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - I remember this. It was late 60's maybe 68/69. It wasn't even a hit here - I think it did better in US - because of the topic. I think its problem was it is too long and radio, in those days, didn't like long singles. I think it is great - especially the bagpipes and the last verse "In the morning, they return with tears in their eyes...the stench of death drifts up to the skies" etc. A brilliant anti-war song.

kurtbrazil Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - I remember this from 1968 or 1969. I remember, tThis wasn't a hit in the UK -- I think it did a bit better in the US what with the Vietnam war being on. I think it's problem was it was too long and in those days radio DJs just played short records. A great song though.

Aug 20, 2008 - I used to listen to this many years ago when it was on the radio, during the Vietnam War...I always felt so sad listening to it, thinking of the war. 40 years later, nothing has changed except the war is now in Iraq. When will we ever learn?
