Jul 26, 2008 - Fondant is not marzipan; It's generally sugar and water that is heated to soft-ball stage then whipped thick. It is not just a US thing. You probably haven't heard of it because because It's a specialty item generally used by cake makers. It's not really commercially available, but specialty cake decorating shops do have it. You can make your own however, there are recipies online for it.

Jul 26, 2008 - Great video. Very informative. As others hinted - DO NOT use Wilton's fondant!!! It is nasty! It tastes like paint. Use a quality fondant, like Pettinice or Satinice - both can be found to purchase online, (and no, I don't sell or represent them in any way) is still sweet and chewy, but without the paint/chemical taste that Wilton's has. Also, do a search online for a recipe for Marshmallow fondant. It works like traditional fondant, but it tastes like Circus Peanuts candy.

Jul 26, 2008 - Robin, the baker in the video, uses pettinice rolled fondant (the brand is Bakels).I agree, after all that work, you want a fondant that is edible!!

Jul 26, 2008 - I use the transparent part of the egg... to paste things to the fondant...
Rockinthekiwis Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - You would use water, not egg white. Egg whites wouldn't be safe to use on the finished cake because of the lack of refrigeration. Sure, the yolk grows bacteria more rapidly than egg whites, but water is just as effective and safer.

cookingupastory Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - It's called fondant. You can get it in most specialty cake-decorating shops, or find it online. She adds special food colorings to get the color she wants.
