Jul 26, 2008 - Advocates of population control blame "overpopulation" for poverty in Bangladesh. But the government dominates the buying and processing of jute, the major cash crop, so that farmers receive less for their efforts than they would in a free market. Impoverished farmers flee to the city, but the government owns 40 percent of industry and regulates the rest with price controls, high taxes and unpublished rules administered by a huge, corrupt, foreign-aid dependent bureaucracy.
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Jobs are hard to find and poverty is rampant. This crowding leads to problems such as sporadic or inefficient food distribution, but this problem is caused — as in Ethiopia — by that country's flawed domestic policies.

Jul 26, 2008 - It is often claimed that poverty in China is the result of "overpopulation." But Taiwan, with a population density five times as great as mainland China's, produces many times as much per capita. The Republic of Korea, with a population density 3.6 times as great as China's, has a per capita output almost 16 times as great.
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - The Malaysian government abandoned population control in 1984, ushering in remarkable economic growth under free market reforms, while Ecuador, Uruguay, Bulgaria and other countries complained at the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo that though they had reduced their population growth, they still had deteriorating economies.
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, world food supplies exceed requirements in all world areas, amounting to a surplus approaching 50% in 1990 in the developed countries, and 17% in the developing regions. "Globally, food supplies have more than doubled in the last 40 years ... between 1962 and 1991, average daily per caput food supplies increased more than 15% ... at a global level, there is probably no obstacle to food production rising to meet demand," according to
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - FAO documents prepared for the 1996 World Food Summit. The FAO also reported that less than a third as many people had less than 2100 calories per person per day in 1990-92 as had been the case in 1969-71. At present, farmers use less than half of the world's arable land. The conversion of land to urban and built-up uses to accommodate a larger population will absorb less than 2% of the world's land, and "is not likely to seriously diminish the supply of

Jul 26, 2008 - All I can say is I am proud that this guy is fundamentalizing the right of a human being(a child, a poor child) to have a right to a life. I am an artist too, and I proudly join other Catholic "artists" like Picasso, Dali, Tolkien, Hitchcock, and Warhol. Oh but wait a second, these people brought no revolution to their fields or to the world according to you because they're brain washed by Catholicism. Silly me.
Orfeo68 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - you bet I am very much entitled to my opinion. You would never know about colonialism and the poverty and depravity the catholic church has caused in my country...and around the world!I however am an atheist precisely because I want very much for people to believe what they want to believe.
luvinmylife2 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - Isn't it ironic that people who are atheists are usually the ones who are 'mean' and call the murder of an innocent baby a 'right'.
Orfeo68 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - this reply makes no sense. This coming from someone educated in the american system? Que risas!! jajaja

Jul 26, 2008 - The reality is that THERE ARE STARVING PEOPLE IN AFRICA AND INDIA AND MANY OTHER COUNTRIES. You may cut & paste all the info in the world you have googled, but remember: The people in China were drowning their Girl babies-period. That is a fact. They are overcrowded in China & there is a limit on the # of children U can have. Why do you think Mother Theresa was in India? To help the starving and ill people.
silverliningmallen Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - We have had several fundraisers for Africa and the Genicide that is going on there. Blame it on any information U have. The fact is that they are starving there--no shoes, no food, very ill, HIV rampant, girls w/ no menstral products which doesn't allow them to attend school when they have their period. They then miss their one meal. You are citing data from 1994 which is rather antiquated.
silverliningmallen Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - We recently saw the horrible political situation in Africa. While one's first reaction is to blame government, which every government can be cited for faults, one cannot deny that the people are starving, there is NO birth control education unless done by volunteers and HIV is rampant.
silverliningmallen Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - No one on this cite was debating over the abundance of food, however even in the US, one of the most strong countries in the world, we have children going to bed starving every night which is deplorable.
silverliningmallen Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - U are forgetting about the children that no one wants. To be born is better than going through Foster Homes where people attain a stipend for ea. child they take in? What about the ones who get beaten? Or R molested? Or get no food? Life is never perfect. U can list ALL the catholic artists U want, but U should be able to represent yourself alone. Who is anyone to dictate what one should do w/ their body? I do not believe in late term abortions unless it is life or death & even then it is awful.
silverliningmallen Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - There ya go, labeling people again. ATHEISTS are not known for being mean. If anything, they are good, w/ out seeking a reward after death the way most religions promise. And how is it that priests can molest, go into the box; confess & be placed w/ more children to molest? How is that right, fair & just? PRIESTS! U don't nor shouldn't be religious in order to be good or know right from wrong. U don't have to touch fire to know it will burn. People should be good & do good because it is good.
silverliningmallen Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - U could be agnostic.

yoyo2379 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - I do not beleive in God; but i believe in life and every single living thing on this world. I don't believe some one else should have the right to end others life. I admire Eduardo's courage, because there are so many other that would never dare to do this and risk their succes or fame.
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - I never said life was perfect. I am not dictating what anyone should do with their body. I am only standing up for someone that can't speak for themselves. There are lots of unwanted children in the world today, and unfortunately many are abused. But should we execute them in order to prevent them from being abused? What about the homeless or the orphans you speak of? Should we get rid of them simply because nobody wants them?
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - also, I was talking about artists because he made it seem artists who were Catholic don't bring anything to the world. The ones I listed obviously did. and i hope to do the same as well.
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - good for you yoyo2379, that has been exactly my view all along. this issue has never been soley a religious thing. its an ethical one.
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - sorry for posting facts. i didn't think you would not like that. And exactly, Mother Theresa was there helping them. She was with them compassionately. She was not advocating for more abortion clinics.
valkyr06 Says:
Jul 26, 2008 - The government of the Philippines relies on foreign aid to control population growth, but protects monopolies which buy farmers' outputs at artificially low prices, and sell them inputs at artificially high prices, causing widespread poverty.
