http://www.ted.com TEDPrize winner Larry Brilliant is an epidemiologist who presided over the last case of SmallPox on the planet. He also founded the Seva Foundation, which works to reverse cases of blindness, and co-founded several technology start-ups, including the legendary online community, The Well. He was recently named Executive Director of the Google Foundation. In this talk, he explains in fascinating detail the key behind the successful WHO campaign to eradicate Smallpox, and then unveils his TEDPrize wish: to build a global system that detects each new disease or disaster as it emerges or occurs.

Aug 20, 2008 - GPHIN is a good idea, but how about leveraging the community of Internet user by simply letting them enter reports about disease outbreaks, on a central GPHIN site?Right now, if I spot a weird case of an apparently unknown disease, I'll report it to a local hospital, then wait... until the hospital goes public with the story (IF they do), and until GPHIN picks up the story from the local newspaper... all this while I have photos of the subject, and could post everything online.

Aug 20, 2008 - dandvd, i had the same initial thought upon hearing this proposal. perhaps, instead of allowing anyone from the internet community to 'freely' report any phenomena that appeared odd and dangerous, GPHIN could design a universally accessable and multi-lingual interface that allows anyone from the internet community to easily specifiy and characterize their specific reports.

cfhahm Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - in other words, it could have simple boxes to click and pictures to guide, as well as uploading capabilities to send in media. this would let GPHIN instantly analyze trends without trenching through unspecified ammature reports.

Aug 20, 2008 - Larry is Brilliant!!! If you have money to donate projects like these might be more worthwhile than art galleries or ballet performance. (Considering the proportions of where donations go. A ballet performance might still be better than another yacht...)
