Barenboim conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a stellar performance of Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony in F minor for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall's 1997 season. Barenboim's "non-conducting," almost DARING the orchestra not to stay together, is an example of his mastery. Please don't waste space commenting on his "non-classic" technique--only complete plebians and marching band students need a human metronome with an invariant beat pattern. Barenboim's a genius, plain and simple.

Jul 7, 2008 - Tis fine - I quite like this performance. I'm sure you're right that Barenboim's lack of gusto is not a revelation of his lack of interest. I guess it's silly to pick him apart...but like at the end he could have wound up with something energetic like most pieces like this deserve, but instead he does some disappointing baton-rise. I don't mind his conducting too too much though, he's alright. And of course the music he produces is wonderful!

Jul 7, 2008 - I don't know why to write of the conductor's poise or interest or whatever. Isn't the point how the orchestra sounds and how they understand the piece, not how the conductor conducts? If youtube were not a visual medium what would people say of this performance?

Jul 7, 2008 - Barenboim is a genius conductor. He doesn't need to be a metronome for the orchestra they are to good for that. at 6:51 when he stops conducting and let the horns get on with it and he looks at the orchestra as if this is what they can do and it's good, and it seems as if he is encouroging the orchestra to play there very best. Outstanding!!!!!!!! Also as a trumpet player myself in my opinion Bud Herseth is no doubt the best Orchestral trumpet player.

Jul 7, 2008 - That's right - the sound is brilliant, as I said. But if I am watching it, I will note the conductor's style of conducting also. I have no doubt Barenboim is a master of his trade - I do wish he showed how interested he was though - just watch MTT doing this same one. How energetic!
