The Adventures of André and Wally B. is an animated short made in 1984 by the Lucasfilm Computer Graphics Project, which would later be spun out as a startup company called Pixar. Although it is technically not a Pixar short, the animation was by John Lasseter, who was working on his first computer animated project and would move on to be a pivotal player at Pixar. The credits for the piece are concept/direction Alvy Ray Smith, animation John Lasseter, technical lead Bill Reeves, technical contributions by Tom Duff, Eben Ostby, Rob Cook, Loren Carpenter, Ed Catmull, David Salesin, Tom Porter, and Sam Leffler, filming by David DiFrancesco, Tom Noggle, and Don Conway, and computer logistics by Craig Good. The animation on the feature was truly groundbreaking at the time, featuring the first use of motion blur in |CG animation. Lasseter pushed the envelope by asking for manipulatable shapes capable of the squash and stretch style, as earlier CG models had generally been restricted to rigid geometric shapes. It was rendered on one Cray X-MP/48 (where 48 stands for 4 processors and 8 million words of internal memory, with word size of 64 bits (i.e. 8 bytes) it means its RAM size was 64 MB) and ten VAX 11/750s from Project Athena.

Nov 20, 2008 - Its weird but cool to see how far computer graphics are back then. But that looked pretty advanced in its day. Its still a fun and classic cartoon to watch.

Nov 20, 2008 - Motion blur is achieved by rendering about 128 similar versions of the same frame and then combining them in a way.

Nov 20, 2008 - I remember seeing this as a teenager in the 80's at the "Festival of Animation" and it was really cutting edge at the time, because all the other animations were still hand-drawn. I think there was 1 other short in the series that year that had computer animation too, but not with the story line. There was also a Lord of the Rings at that time, that used people acting out the scenes, then traced onto animated cells with the characters involved-very realistic from what I recall!

Nov 20, 2008 - cray 48 (4 processors & 8 million words of internal memory) word size 64 bits (8 bytes), meaning a RAM of 64 MB (a Commodore 64 was 61.xx **Kbytes** a couple years later)...so at the time they were working with (amateur guess) the equivalent of about 2 laptop computers...if even that. How far computers have come!!!

Nov 20, 2008 - Did they lacked the technology to do tracking shots? It would've looked really impressive to audiences unfamiliar with computer animation.
