May 14, 2008 - I think I read somewhere long ago that he yanked the frets, filed and filled them with wood putty and then coated the fretboard w/marine epoxy.

May 14, 2008 - Didn't Jaco get his "crunchy" bass sound by putting varnish on the neck? I can't remember, probably not.

May 14, 2008 - This is the best jazz-rock band I never heard. I have only listened a band like this: "Imán Califato Independiente" (Spain, a sort of jazz, flamenco, arabian, indian and rock fussion. You must listen them.

May 14, 2008 - Johny117, Jaco's sound was in his hands, as he always was quoted as saying. =) Now, he *did* has his fingerboard epoxy-coated on his fretless, to prevent the Rotosound RS-66 roundwound strings from digging into the wood. He used Petit's Poly-Poxy, which is actually a marine (boat) epoxy. But yeah, the sound was in his hands, mang. He got that sound no matter what bass he played. =)

May 14, 2008 - Zawinul mentioned this years ago in a magazine article. Please note that his keyboard for the melody/lead is wired backwards. High notes are left, low ones right.

May 14, 2008 - Jaco was one of the first bassists to use Hartke amps, which were to first to utilize aluminum cone speakers instead of the usual paper cone. This contributed to his signature trebly, biting tone. He also used light-guage strings, .040" on the G string to .090" on the E.

May 14, 2008 - Hi everyone! I thought Lenny White was the drummer for WR, then Omar Hakim. Obviously, Im wrong. Can anyone give me the rundown?
pedroV2003 Says:
May 14, 2008 - 4 top-notch musicians. Two veterans in Wayne and Joe and two young lions. Growing up in Ft lauderdale in the 60-70s I consider Jaco a personal triumph and tragedy.

orlandofriend Says:
May 14, 2008 - The statement about Jaco's tone being attributed to Hartke amps is just silly and false. His tone was himself first, his Jazz bass second, and third would have to be the giant Acoustic brand amps he used early in his career. Jaco got his first Hartke amp in 1984. His first solo album was in 1976, and most of his greatest works were before 1984.
