Golden Gate Orchestra was a pseudonym for the California Ramblers, one of the fantastic, but not well-known orchestras during the 20's. Jul 7, 2008 - Not a well know orchestra, but the musicians certainly were. Phil Napoleon (lead had a great dixieland band at Nick's in Greenwich Village) Mole, Dorsey, RolLinii (I'd love to hear the fountain pen), and Nicols, who, with his "Five Pennies" became better known as a cornet player. What a group! Thanks for posting this classic.

Jul 7, 2008 - PERFECT start for my Friday night festivities and my weekend! I love the BANJO and the snappy sizzling jazzy orchestration and especially that it has that vintage sound. I know what a kazoo is, but what on earth is a goofus and a hot fountain pen? :)Something to sign HOT autographs with for Hot! Hot! Melting Flappers or for writing down their phone numbers? Thank you Patrick.

Jul 7, 2008 - Great sizzling tune isn't it? Thanks to the internet I'm able to solve a couple of mysteries. The red hot fountain pen was a kind of miniature clarinet (small enough to fit in a pocket) with a saxophone mouthpiece. Goofus - a kind of two-octave keyboard-mouth-organ, manufactured in France in the 20's and played by blowing directly into it, or through a length of tubing that allows the instrument to be laid flat on the stage. Adrian Rollini, who features it to great effect, favored this method.

Jul 7, 2008 - Thanks for posting this. Al Duffy was my violin coach (I was only one of only two students that I am aware of). It's great to see someone keeping this great era of music alive! Al could play anything from classical to jazz, had perfect pitch and could read any score at first sight. His improvisations were awesome! I'm honored to have been his student. He passed December 22nd, 2007 at the age of 100.
