UniversalTVfan1994 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Fantasmagorie is the first cartoon, not this cuz this was made in 1914.
Matrek11 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - The first animated cartoon (in the traditional sense, i.e. on film) was "Fantasmagorie" by the French director Émile Cohl. Released in 1908.
PencilO11 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - this is friggen amazing, especily cuz it was all hand drawn (even the background)
zazooing Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - a part of the intro is missing, overall the film lasted 12 minutes. But it's great to find that on youtube
Lamnont Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - No Humourous phases of funny faces is, it was made by J. Stuart Blackton

Nov 18, 2008 - This may be 94 years old, but it hasn't lost any of it's charm in my view!

Nov 18, 2008 - WOW! I've heard of this but never seen it! I laughed! NOW, are there "Little Nemo" cartoons?
MonopolyKing95 Says:

feckadoodlethe2nd Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Without Winsor Mccay frame by frame animation would not exist.
TopCat0601 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - what?!? They showed this on Cartoon Network?!? If they still did that today, I would be in love with that channel. As it is, I pretty much hate it.
jmn327 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - The dialogue should've included Gertie screaming "AAH! A WALKING ANACHRONISM!" at the mammoth. But it's still awesome to see this. I remember seeing about five seconds of it on a dinosaur show when I was a kid.
natebooce Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - i >3 Mccay
carrotstick90 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Ahhhh, it so adorable! Why can't some TV still be this innocent? This is so revolutionary too, with the frame by frame animation. Also, how he spliced in real-action film at the end. What a rad guy :).
RuemeChan Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - that's not entirely true. McCay was a notable early animator but the one who pretty much introduced "frame by frame" or at least made it noticeable was Blackton with his "lightening sketches"
AlexanderBlues1228 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - It's also important to note that Gertie was originally shown as a part of McCay's vaudeville act in which the live action McCay would interact with his cartoon creation. Good as this film is, it's barely an echo of the real thing!
JWolps Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Arguably the greatest five minutes of my life. McCay, you have a large concentration of awesome in your general area.
Genesis415 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - I like this, Windsor McCay was a great animator, but I think it was Disney who really took this and give it its 'boost'.. I think Disney made stuff like this relate to kids and adults. Whereas, in my opinion, Gertie the Dinosaur might have was used as a sort of after dinner entertainment?
TJSerabian Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Now THAT'S how animation was done. No computers, no photocopies, just page after page after page of hand drawn pictures. Try doing that!
