Nov 18, 2008 - What happens at 2:24 - 2:25. There is a lil black puff of smoke?
kimmern123 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - It's the ignition of the OMS-engines for the OMS Assist Burn. The engines burn hydrazine and often a reddis brown puff can be seen just as the engines ignite.

Nov 18, 2008 - There is nothing more stunning and beautiful than a flawless shuttle launch. Remember, there is a single light of science, and to brighten it anywhere is to brighten it everywhere. This is great stuff, it'll be sad to see this program go.
oreoweb6 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - the puff seems to come from the SRB that went behind the shuttle. SRBs always do that after separation. What you don't see cause video only 6 hours long is more foam coming off the tank after MECO. Even after the shuttle separates the tank, cameras onboard the tank show more foam shedding. They say its better it sheds after 2 minutes..so they guarantee no loss of foam before the 2 minute point?Ever since sts-1..the space shuttle's first flight, foam loss was experinced.

Nov 18, 2008 - I wanna goooo!!!
325Kanga Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - The time is 2:26 on the film when you see the puff of smoke. It doesn't appear to be the SRB simply because you can see the boosters in the distance. When the shuttle completes the round, the puff appears to come off the back part.

Nov 18, 2008 - This commentator completely ROCKS!
oreoweb6 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - if you look over it again..the SRB is rotating and when it disappears behind the shuttle the nozzle is pointing to the shuttle..very rare event. The dark soot is consistant to SRB exhaust. nothing on the shuttle puffs out dark smoke. The SSME puts out clean and the hypergolic fuel (used for steering jets) is clean. Even the APU exhaust (at base of tail/ruddder) does not have that dark output.

Nov 18, 2008 - marvelous tecnology USA
kimmern123 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Like I've already mentioned, the puff is the ignition of the OMS-engines. Several crews have reported seeing reddish brown puffs as the engines ignite during OMS-burns.
Minuteman091112 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - I wonder how many launches it will take to no longer have morons saying this is fake? Where do these people come from?? We landed on the moon in 1969. Yes, The United States still owns the realm of flight whether the rest of the world likes it or not!!
Minuteman091112 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - 4.5 million pounds of humans and hardware taking aim on the international space station! Fantastic!! STS-124

Nov 18, 2008 - We were luckly to be in holiday in Florida at the time of the launch. We watched it from Spaceview Park in Titusville.Looked like all the other people there enjoyed the launch as much as we did. Suggest you go and see the next few because the Shuttle is being discontinued in a couple of years ....
