Jul 7, 2008 - Jazz does require an outside source to influence how we feel, since musicians bounce ideas off each other and no two songs are played alike, but the thing that comes from within is their past influences of a musician that gives them their voice. Art in general might not be the truth, since it makes you feel something superficially that stemmed from an emotion that was real, but does that mean that there are art forms out there that are real?

Jul 7, 2008 - correction, I meant to say "Jazz in general might not be the truth, since..."

Jul 7, 2008 - I think you make a good point, though I am not certain that I entirely agree. Consider a solo instrumentalist (Joe Pass, Dave Holland, Joe Diorio) playing jazz. There is a dialog with the material and with the audience. It seems to me that jazz does require a reference point from which to improvise; that can happen between what the player intends and what the listener takes from that intention. Jazz, to my mind, being the highest development of this ideal.

Jul 7, 2008 - All of the original members are now deceased.Connie Kay(Drums)was the first to leave us. Percy Heath(bass)then Milt Jackson (Vibs). Finally John Williams piano. I don't remember the exact dates of death. I met Milt Jackson 1 year after Connie 's death on a jazz cruise. He told me the group would break up after finishing up their contracts to appear at different venues. Tootie Heath the brother of Percy Heath replaced Connie at the drum position during this period...about 1998.
