Nov 18, 2008 - My guess is it's described as "difficult" because it comes at the end of a very demanding opera for the soprano. Joan's version of it here is simply one of the most amazing and beautiful displays of vocalism I've ever heard. I don't think we'll ever be as lucky to hear a voice as incredible as hers again--she was the best! I'm so grateful to those fans who place these snipets of her talent on YouTube.

Nov 18, 2008 - Where can you find that?

33blueberries Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - It was on youtube some time ago. I've seen clips of it reproduced in other shows, most recently, a documentary of Australian ABC about Sutherland. It's worth watching :)

Nov 18, 2008 - c'est une superbe version. Si Bellini avait pu l'entendre il aurait écrit pour joan sutherland de nombreux opéras!

Nov 18, 2008 - She was the best of her time and probably will be the best for always.

Nov 18, 2008 - Dame Sutherland just broke both of her legs at age 81. (July 7, 2008) I send her best wishes for a speedy recovery. My prayers are with her.

operamagnus Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Yes, I think you're right. Also, the tessitura of this aria is very high, higher than most of the rest of the role.

Eiswirth Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I agree. There are many sopranos past and current with extaordinarily beautiful voices and great interpretative skills, but to my ear no one has ever equalled producing the brilliant sounds Sutherland made. She will always remain first in my book. This Puritani aria is a perfect example; thank you for posting it.

Nov 18, 2008 - I'm not totally sure that I've ever seen you say a single positive thing about Joan or any artist outside of La Callas and La Fleming. You must get bored listening to only two sopranos all of the time.

Iareto Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Zzz...*snore*...

Iareto Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Holy cow!! This shows how little I knew back then! How different I am now. Lol. Ever look back and find that you sounded kind of stupid? She's INCREDIBLE here. One of the best recordings of the aria ever. La Stupenda!

meltzerboy Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I agree with your second comment. In fact, one of the remarkable things about Sutherland's performances were that one got the impression there was so much voice in reserve that she could immediately sing the whole opera again! Same with artists such as Nilsson and Flagstad (on live recordings). Despite the diction problems, this performance is splendid from the perspective of sheer voice and brilliant technique.

Nov 18, 2008 - I sang with Dame Joan in Philadelphia back in the '70's. She had been my idol since I was 12. It was the most amazing experience. I sang in the chorus for "La Traviata" and "Maria Stuarda." What an amazing voice and amazing experiences for me!!!
