Popov's Swimming Freestyle Stroke

Nov 18, 2008 - great collage of keys to aerodynamics in water.

Gigi086 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - my instructor said we have to do a "S" when we pull the hand in the water. It can make us swim faster, is it correct? But in the competition I don't see the pros doing it...

TikalDog Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - That "S" thing is old school!!Almost no coches teach that anymore.

georgemonday Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - The "S" is correct. If you are using that stroke with S you will deny the lift/interceptor which is under you. It is Bernoullis´s principe. UNder the swimmer is laminary streaming, around and up is turbulent. If you will deny the laminar streaming, you will be faster. All these theories you can find in good books about Biomechanics of swimming.. ;)

Nov 18, 2008 - great video! perfect sprint technique.

UNo0b Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Pulling in an S is not important, you should grab the water using your hand/forearm as a unit with a high elbow. Many people who think to pull in an S shape are only using their hand and therefore create minimal propulsion.

Nov 18, 2008 - amazing swimmer... a living legend

anglersohn Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - What is it that "doggy style", with the head beeing completely out of the water? is he making fun?

asuljic Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - He looks at 45 degree angle and not at the bottom of the pool. Reason being is to drop his feet deeper into the water to get a maximum kick propulsion. Ian Thorpe does the same thing.

asuljic Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - It creates more drag and its harder to swim. He probably does it as a drill for his arm workouts.
