Nov 18, 2008 - I never knew as a resident of vegas that Castaways was imploded!

Nov 18, 2008 - The happy Gilligan music to this made it less sad.

Nov 18, 2008 - Las Vegas went from being a glitzy place to a MegaResort. All the best buildings are gone. The old signs they once carried are probably in the neon sign boneyard outside of Vegas. Stardust, Aladin, Castaways, Desert Inn, Dunes, Frontier, El Rancho, Landmark, Hacienda, Silver Slipper, and many others are only memories to those that were Vegas residents at one time. I'm sure Vegas doesn't look the same now.

Nov 18, 2008 - "ragemanchoo" There's a museum of sorts downtown that collects all the signs and lights and other big casino trinkets, so that one probably went there to join all the others.

Nov 18, 2008 - The Showboat was a cool hotel and casino but when they changed it to Castaways it became crap.

hufasa Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Oh well, bye Showboat. Finally. I watched the fires on the West Side from the '92 Rodney King riots out there from the 18th floor.

gotohaskells Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - It doesn't look like the fun old Vegas. It's just full of crap that reminds me of Paris Hilton now.

omahablackrose Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I agree. Las Vegas has changed drastically. Where the Excalibur now stands, I remember it used to be an empty lot where people who had motorcycle dirtbikes could run around on. I learned how to ride my very first motorcycle dirtbike on that old lot. I even remember breaking off the clutch handle when I took a nasty fall from a 6 foot high mound of dirt. Ah, the best memories of Vegas are only in classic movies anymore.

Roadsidepictures Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - That's sad. One night I had dinner at the Green Shack (demolished) and then walked into the Showboat and played a keno machine while waiting for a friend. I won $300 on a quarter machine. Montgomery Wards used to be across the street. So much has changed in Las Vegas and it's for the worse.

superboyadrian Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - First, it was named the Showboat, and I think it's the first major "locals" resort, but when it was re-born (briefly) in 2000 as Castaways, bankruptcy was then filed (or declared) and closed its doors. I really don't know what will be the plans be, so you'll wait and see!
