Nov 18, 2008 - Oh I love this part of the movie. I had a parakeet that would hear this bird chirp and would start chirpy loudly. I suppose he was talking to the bird in the movie. What a special moment and a special little bird in my life this clip brings back, thank you.

Nov 18, 2008 - I love this movie, all-time favorite. But don't know that such good looking Francis and Clare were necessary to maintain interest in the film. Jesus was "uncomeley in appearance" [Isaiah 53?] (unattractive), and accounts of Francis were that he too was unattractive. Clare in this film is breathtakingly beautiful. Why is the usual Hollywood method of using beautiful people necessary in this film? To provide contrast, juxtaposition with the lepers? Doesn't seem necessary. Feedback?
HughHue Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Hi Azorka. I'm not sure how Isaiah who lived centuries before Christ Jesus could say he was "uncomely". It's likely neither Francesco nor Chiara were as beautiful as the players cast... but being Italians... there was a better than average chance. What we see here in this stunningly beautiful film is where St Francis has had a nervous breakdown. Everything he knows and values will "break-down" and the Beloved Brother is now on the way to becoming a realized being and Ascended Master.

Nov 18, 2008 - i am answering two questions in one comment. first, how did isaiah know what jesus looked like - well he was a prophet and he is said to have predicted the coming of the messiah.second, i think the reason francis and claire are so beautiful in this movie, is because movies are visual, and while we watch this movie we are continually reminded of a vision of beauty - both inner - and outer.i think that the greatest beauty of these actors is in their expressions - and how they make us feel.
Azorka82 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - That's a good way to view it. However, the lepers are visually awful and it would seem to be the films purpose is to convey that one look past outward appearance to the inner being. About feeling...not meaning to be argumentative, but Mel Gibson's 'The Passion' wa all about feeling while raking in millions. While we homeless have 2-5 year waiting lists for housing.
theinkbrain Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - i am not being argumentative either ...we are all to some extent products of our culture - and i think that all cultural decisions are to some extent compromises. many people learned about clair and francis this way ...art has to take liberties with reality or else it is only 'reality' . art has to get our attention before we will pay attention to it. yes - social problems are a part of our being a society. - being homeless cant be easy - how ironic that st francis chose to be homeless....
Azorka82 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Ironic indeed. Both he and Lazarus would be arrested for trespass in this country. Lazarus would be arrested for panhandling (he was a beggar--Luke 16:19-31) and sleeping in a businessmen's doorway, and St. Francis would be arrested for same--sleeping on private property. Like I was threatened with more than once, most recently here in Bellingham, WA. Sleeping on the porch of a church becasue it provided cover from the rain. They almost arrested me.
theinkbrain Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - i am truly sorry. civilization has as its collateral war and profit. st francis found his answer, but his times and ours are very different..its up to us to find our own answers. we have to find refuges from the bitterness and difficulty of life, and find the things that give us joy. what we resist persists. we must escape and find the places inside us and outside us where we can experience love, solace and joy. that is the big challenge we are faced with in life - at least that's what i think.
Azorka82 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - That's the problem. There is no refuge. the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate and its not mega-church Ted Haggard types that are being incarcerated.

Nov 18, 2008 - Ascended master? No.. let's leave the New Age out of this..that isn't what the film is about. St. Francis responded to Christ in the best way that he could at the time. If it were not for debts I have to pay off, I might likely do something similar. I feel like leaving this world and what temptations I can behind and joining some monastery where i can serve God without the world encroaching on me. Then maybe I can be free of scrupulosity.

AmyCoeur Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - You must create your own refuge, as St. Francis did. It's possible. But you must work with other people in order to do it. Not easy, but then it never was.
