1944年秋，日軍在太平洋戰爭中節節潰敗。海軍中將大西瀧治郎（伊武雅刀飾）提議組建空軍特攻隊轟炸敵艦，用僅存的兵力與敵人週旋到底。關上尉（的場浩司飾）迅速著手實行中將的計劃。但幾個月後，美軍展開登陸戰。日軍只好在鹿兒島知覽機場設立特攻基地，全力死守沖繩。 板東勝次少尉（窪塚洋介飾）、田端廣一少尉（筒井道隆飾）及中西正也少尉（德重聰飾）這班年青人即將出擊。隊員們分別用自己的方式渡過人生最後的夜晚。而第二天，親人們各自目送著他們起飛奔赴戰場......439位年輕人將會為了守護所愛之人... 向著一條不歸之路起飛...
