Nov 18, 2008 - Glinka's music is stunning, especially when sung by such a great Russian voice as Netrebko's! She manages the flowing melodies of this scene so well that it seems she was born to sing Lyudimila! The spontaneity (from the lowest to the highest notes!) and sense of joy in her singing are very welcome, but what really impresses me is her creamy and silvery voice!

Nov 18, 2008 - I agree, silvery and creamy - perfect description

Nov 18, 2008 - i absolutely agree! i love the way you described her voice, silvery and creamy! her middle register is just as perfect as her higher and lower vocal register! and Anna Netrebko is a good actress too!

Nov 18, 2008 - And besides she's so lovely in this costume! ))) She's the prettiest Ludmila I've ever seen!)))

Nov 18, 2008 - I think Anna Netrebko get some lessons of magic. When I am listening her, always i want something sweet, usually honey :)

pocomoco2007 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Glinka never parted with the Italian school of opera. Therefore you will hear yodeling as in this excerpt It may be superb yodeling but this is what turns off most people from opera.

OperaBR Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Actually, Glinka's Ruslan y Lyudmila is an example of what some people call "Russian Bel Canto". The Italians aren't the owners of such beautiful musical expressions such as coloratura, high notes and vocal scales. Besides, there's an obvious rythmic difference between Ludmila's florid singing here and the Italian way to sing fioritura.

Nov 18, 2008 - Now I understand why this was her breakout role.......not everyone could wear that costume and still have a personality shine through......fantastic. A part that seems to have been in her blood......just gorgeous singing.

Nov 18, 2008 - this is wonderfull scene , pity that it is not so well known outside of Russia. Consequently so few viewers of his amazing performance

mummacole Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - What a wonderful vid. This was the way she began in her homeland with its wonderful dark rich tales .She has certainly come a long way since then and long may she continue...she has made opera more approachable for those of us who sing like frogs whether in or outside the shower.

Garichek Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - First of all, coloratura and yodeling are not the same. Second, if you don't like "yodeling " in opera, why bother listening? And what do you have against Italians who invented the genre?

lolaljaaljaa Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - there there, no one has anything against the italians. ;-)

ATsarIsBorn Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - This -- and her Natasha Rostov -- is why we fell in love with Netrebko. But she does not sing Verdi, Bellini or Donizetti as well, as in style, as she sings the Russians, and I wish she'd stick to them -- and that they'd do more Russian operas in the west than the same old four or five.
