This morning AMD held a press briefing at the unassuming Clift hotel in San Francisco (cheaper than the "W" hotel where the company used to held such meetings... cost cuttings I guess) about its upcoming Barcelona processor. Despite rumours, AMD says that the quad core chip is still scheduled to ship this summer. The demo part of the event was really noisy, and you'll experience that on the video. Sparking a remark from AMD's server and workstation division VP Randy Allen, on the feasibility of having such demos in the future, as servers get more and more powerful/noisy! Anyway, the demo compared two AMD 4-sockets systems: one with the Barcelona quad core chip and the other with a shipping dual core processor. Both systems were equally configured with the processors at equal clock frequency and running the POV-Ray benchmark. Without surprise, the quad core system finished first, running almost twice as fast as the dual core one.

Nov 18, 2008 - Blah blah blah, thank you very blahmuch (simple math).

ghosttwo2 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Notice how everybody is faster than the other guy? And it's Pee Oh Vee Ray, not Pawv Ray. POV is an acronym. These are the people who call GUI 'Gooey'.

shakidaki Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - you can buy a opteran for about 300 bucks that is not expensive i payed 999 for my amd 64 fx 55 processor and amd quad core is actualy 2 processors in one box with 4 cores a piece so dont say amd is lieing and the amd quad core platform the consumer version is 300 bucks and that 2 processing units in one box if you dont believe search it on google

shakidaki Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - and go on microcenters website and checkout the byopc section and clik on cpus and the amd 64-fx74 socket f processor is 300 bucks and thats microcenter

Nov 18, 2008 - I don't see the point in "true quad core" processors if Intel's aren't true Quads but are faster. All AMD needs is to put a larger L2 Cache on their processors and they'll probably be faster than Intel.

koawl Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - if i'm not wrong.. adding a larger L2 cache will increase the cost.. isn't really the AMD way =Dand as always said " u pay for what u get"

professionalrax Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I agree, although im still an AMD fan. Ur right about the L2 cache, but keep in mind that AMDs core architecture is very different than that of Intel's. The reason why AMD cant have a large enough L2 cache is because the memory controller bus for AMD's CPUs r located within the CPU itself, whereas Intel has it on a separate chip on to the motherboard giving them enough space on the CPU to have a larger L2 cache.

jaybird3k35 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - well i am a video editor and to be honest every single intel chip machine i have used has out performed amd so i am not switching

vmelkon Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - It depends on the CPUs you are comparing. I don't know if these quad core (barcelona) are better with video editing but from generation to generation, things change. It's a matter of looking at benchmarks.

zytekfan Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Barcelona and all of K10 sucks right now due to the L3 errata and some other small problems.Once B3 stepping comes out, K10 will be a lot faster and the frequencies will start going up :)

qwertymac93 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - omg, 16cores?

atixcrossfire Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - amd 6400+ 3.41ghz,2 gigs ati/ocz 6400 memory, ati hd 3870 x2 crossfire x,2 raptors in raid 0, 19" nec monitor, x-fi sound card, asus m2R32-mvp, and playin crysis in ultra real mode like the way its meant to be played and in vids!!

emirilyasov Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - who the fuck needs 16 cores??? even 8. 4 cores is coll for everything( unless u do NASA research)

humexavier Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Assembling a intel chip should be easier;;New tech info is working on a levitating laser AMD processor which obtains its power while levitating, with a simple solar cells around it and laser light being its light source, not sun light.

JTMarlin8 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Consider the fact that engineers/artists are getting paid to sit there twiddling their thumbs while their code compiles or their images/videos render. 8-16 cores makes a difference. 8-core processors will be out in 2009, and there are plenty of professionals that will be able to take advantage of four of them for 32 cores.

Greenmarine6 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - jaybird you are not buying the right AMD chip because until the C2d's came out the AMD's out performed the INtel chips hands down in everything..it's obvious you never bought an AMD chip. I am a pre press color professional and Intel's sucked ass for Photo shop until the Core 2 duo's came out...now we have Macs with c2d in them and they are well just OK.I do most of my work at home on my AMD 6400+ platform and it out performs the new macs Hands down

8309400 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - that claim is just justification for more processor overkill and prepping more marketing hype for intels profit!

JTMarlin8 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Unless you compile large amounts of code or render lots of video or graphics, you simply won't understand.

8309400 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - ill tell you a little secret about coding games and java apps dude, a processor CANT FETCH data faster than the storage can give it and the speed at which storage gives a cpu data is measured by its random access reads and writes speed. A 4 ms random write/seek provides only 250 requests (fetches) per second, wich means your 3GHZ quad core isn't working faster than 250 HZ, most drives do 12ms read write, so a pc runs around 100HZ the cpus GHZ is overkill unless you have a ramsan300

8309400 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - beleive me im very coding aware and pretty soon when (one microsecond write speed) ssds become affordable, game companies will probably start wirting games in Ultra Panavision (2.76:1)but it wont matter because ati video cards wont need much map compression like 3Dc, when sorage drives are blazing fast compression isnt needed much.

8309400 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - if processor companies tha make desktops can tame their love for dumbness, we should thenbe able to have energy efficient pcs that run blazing fast monster games without the power drain and consequent high cost of ownership for vide cards and uselessly over watting processors, Hopefully soon, we will be able to play games like crysis in panavision scripting, at under 15 watts, Maybe video card companies will have pico itx video cardswith the same performance at a fraction of the power drain?

GnosticDjinn Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - JTMarlin8 is right. I render some pretty heavy shit, 24 million verts plus render effects. On 4 cores one frame would take an insulting amount of time. I use an 8 core right now, but I'm also buying a couple of 4 socket quad-core mobos to set up to work with this PC as my interface. That will literally open the door for blazing fast renders that *don't require much of anything to be written to disk except the final output.* I'll drop you a 24 mil count frame and let you render it.
