Nov 18, 2008 - What is playing Counter Strike like on Fedora, are there good/better frame rates than Windows, more efficient kernel etc.?

Nov 18, 2008 - I tried playing in vista and every single game crashed. I tried (with reluctance) to install my games on Linux, expecting them not to work, but, to my surprise, My gaming box is now a Linux Box.I used play on linux. See in my videos for a How-to

Nov 18, 2008 - Wine lets you run windows exe files in the Linux environment, its bacally a windows emulator

etrnldrk Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Wine is more of a translator than an emulator.

etrnldrk Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Install steam in fedora 8 (core has been dropped from the name since the release of 7), then go to steampowered(dot)com and download the steaminstall.msi or google the steaminstall.exe and run it with Wine.

etrnldrk Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I have gotten 10-40fps better within Fedora and Ubuntu than I did with Windows. Mostly it's just registry editing within Wine (it's pretty much the same as you would do within Windows), but Wine+Linux turns out to be a better performer, at least for me, with the Source games. CoD4 runs pretty damn well too within Wine too.

shaun928 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - oh ok, i wasn't sure on the terminology :)

Nov 18, 2008 - Sweet.. Fedora 8 rocks

SakuraUK Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I think by mac you mean OS XAnd Linux is better than OS X Because its waay more stable, you don't need to buy an out of date £1200 computer and its free!

SoFoSTheWise Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Wine Is Not an Emulator

macrover180 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - say I have a tiny question: is it less of a hassle to install Fedora than Ubuntu? I attempted to install Ubuntu for several hours now and so far I can't get it installed. I suspect that it could just be my hard drive that's giving me trouble but I not too sure. Another tiny question-can fedora instantly recognize my wireless usb adapter(linksys) and allow me to connect? Thanks for your time!

2882890 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I wouldn't even agree, there are aspects of MACS that are good, UNIX kernel, fast stable enough but thats because they premake their machines for the OS (or vice versa, also I know thats now changing). Linux and Windows are different. They adapt to the machine they are put on and relaistically with the whole open source community behind Linux it wins hands down. So the battle realistically is between MAC and Linux and Linux has far too many strong points in my opinion.

pwnagizer1 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - you're forgtting compatibility....windows is the only one of the three that has any compatibility wit games. If you want to tally up visual effects and slap on a "CAUTION, SEIZURES MAY OCCUR" warning go ahead. I'm sticking to vista with sp1. if you have any idea how to tweak vista or have a antivirus program and a computer that can handle vista...vista is the bomb. dont bitch because your old pentium 3 and 256mb of ram lag a little, or about blitches that you yourself can fix in minutes...

pwnagizer1 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - to follow that up, if you can prove me wrong and put a video of gaming in fedora without an emulator instead of another visual effects video of windows that look like jello when you move them... I'd be happy to use fedora. or even mac for that matter.

punktdawg Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Ubuntu obviously has a lot more support, although if you use some elbow grease you can find support for Fedora as well. I like the Fedora distro because I've been using Red Hat and am very familiar with Red Hat's way of doing things.

punktdawg Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I added some annotations that should answer some of your questions.

bastion1232 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - If you are heavy into gaming you would probably want to stick to windows (vast majority of games are written for windows), although a few that do run natively under linux, Eve: Online, Doom3, Never Winter Nights: Platinum, Unreal Tournament2k3 not sure about 2004, Sauerbauten (aka cube 2) Nexuis. WoW runs very well under WINE.
