Nov 18, 2008 - Lucky kids! My 3-yr old loves the video. He'd like to know though, why is the train going backwards at the end?
chasingmoose Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - The route that the train takes is a little odd. It moves forward, south, about 1/4 mile, stops at SE Spokane St and then reverses for about 2 miles or so, northward, towards downtown Portland. Then it stops again and moves forward, south, back to the original starting point at Oaks Park.

Nov 18, 2008 - That's the stern wheeler Portland Rose isn't it? Or is that the Willamette river queen? Either way it's a great shot.

Nov 18, 2008 - It also could look like it was used in "The Polar Express"!

Nov 18, 2008 - Go to Googel maps and go to Portland,Organ than go to SE 4th Ave/SE Caruthers St and right there is #700. Then stay in Portland and go to SE Holgate Blvd and go to the empty part of the yard where there is no track and the Round House wich she is stored is there.

ctgott1 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - An engine that size would be equipped with a mechanical stoker. Much easier on the back!

Nov 18, 2008 - no, but it would if it were oil fired.

Nov 18, 2008 - Nice video. By the way, what is the background music that you added? Can you tell me the title or provide a music file?
chasingmoose Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - This is the Oaks Park Station stop on the Springwater Corridor. it is the most convenient place for the excursion train folks to set up their big tent for tickets, etc., and it is right next to the parking lot for Oaks Park Amusement Park, so train-goers have a place to park thier cars. it's also a pretty spot, right next to the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge.

Nov 18, 2008 - Thanks for the film! My son really enjoyed the shots of the wheels close up! Cool! (great music too...)
DanielVolker Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Actually, they aren't steam BRAKES. They are simply steam heat lines that are leaking a small ammount. I guess you have to expect that from 60+ year old equipment!
