Oct 12, 2008 - revenant2282, you obviously know nothing of science or genetics..It is a fact that people of certian ethnicity have an advantage in particular fields of sport and also with more natural abilities such as singing. It has been proved that people of caribbean decent have stronger muscle tissue, a reason why jamaicans are good sprinters!! Race is a large deciding factor into whether you have a particular vocal ability. Not many white women can sing like aretha franklin. Explain why !!!! You can't !

Oct 12, 2008 - the singing voice is all about influence. not about ethnic background. an example: we aren't born with accents. one picks-up an accent by those who influnce speech upon it. the same goes for singing. if one's classically trained from a very young age (as leaona was) and is influenced by the likes of mariah/eva cassidy/whitney, it's almost a guarantee that his/her voice will mature into one that transposes those influences.

SOME people of African descent- not just Caribean- can run fast because they have more fast-twitch tissue, WHICH HAS NO BEARING ON VOCAL ABILITY, not because of "stronger muscles". Nurture, however, can have SOME effect vocal ability: a child singing gospel music in church every week would likely grow up able to sing better than one never sings in their life.
