An example of a Shodan Test under Nishio Sensei. Tests were held every 3 months on 2 Sundays in Yokohama and Tokyo, about 40 tests on average. There are 7 judges (3 at front and 4 corners + 2 students tallying the scores. After 45+ years and thousands of tests they know in minutes if you can pass or fail. No marathon tests and a written scoring system. If it is not good enough you fail. There are no "Hail Mary" pass everybody anyways. You have to know your stuff and knock it out.
