Jul 7, 2008 - Wow what a gem, thank goodness folks can get to these archives. Chordwayze, I had forgotten about Steve Race, your note is dead on how the Beeb was in those days.♫♪♫♪

Jul 7, 2008 - Steve Race! the truly English introduction juxtaposed with the spontaneous wonderful music - a great combination. Thanks so much for sharing this

Jul 7, 2008 - Laurindo and the Modern Jazz Quartet play beautifully here, but the host is a total snob. Listening to him talk about the 'proper way to play a guitar,' makes me want to smack him across his Bourgeois face.

Jul 7, 2008 - Perhaps he sounds "snobbish"...but he's correct in his asessment of guitar popularity of the time. Almeida was a true artist and musical genius. It was he who brought the guitar to "respectibility" in the jazz culture.

Jul 7, 2008 - Gorgeous. It's a jazzy chorinho.

Jul 7, 2008 - That's Bossa Nova actually
cgsomlo Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Never forget that Laurindo could never sound "snobbish" since he was Brazilian and all his music are an evidence of that.

Jul 7, 2008 - Long live Laurindo! I heard this on a radio sta. in La. about 20 years ago. The radio sta. went off the air late, I fell asleep and it came back at 6 am and I heard the intro he played exactly the same as this video. It had a profound effect on me. Thanks for this important add and to see this great preformance form 1964.

falmouth8 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - The host was Steve Race, well known on BBC television many years ago.

Jul 7, 2008 - wow i luv that guy in the begining, he sounds like his underwear is so tight, i luv it, almeida is one of the greatest but i still like luiz bonfa more
fuzzfactory Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Yeah, I agree. It's kind of funny. I've never been around anyone who felt that snooty about rock. Usually the snooty people you find today only listen to "rare" rock from the sixties blah blah. Rock from that era did suck dicks compared to Almeida, though.
FRONKY88 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Чудесный чистый интеллигентный джаз.Как здорово слышать хитро вплетённые в джаз босса-новы Жобима.

Jul 7, 2008 - Saoff... But you shoulda heard that announcer (Steve Race) play jazz piano. Ok he was a stiff-necked, 1950's BBC Englishman. That's how the BBC insisted theirannouncers were back then. But Race knew jazz, even if doesn't know much about the way guitar should or shouldn't be played.
