Nov 18, 2008 - Great clip! Thanks for posting. That is actually either Rich Haering or Bruce Gates playing lead trumpet. Couldn't tell on that particular number. Vaughn Nark is the one not playing at the end of the section near the drummer. He must not have had a part on that one.

Nov 18, 2008 - I believe the chart is by trumpet player Jeff Tyzik, who produced the Tonight Show albums in the 80's.

Nov 18, 2008 - wow...you gotta love how doc just slots every single note right in the center.

Nov 18, 2008 - That's Joe Eckert playing lead alto. He's an absolute monster.

Nov 18, 2008 - I will confirm that lead trumpeter in the background is indeed Vaughn Nark. I have been a longtime friend of him for many years, and wouldn't mistake the shot of him at 0:51 and 1:28 in the clip. Vaughn auditioned right out of high school and has occupied their lead chair for almost twenty years from that point :) Although he is now retired, I make no mistake in tagging him in the background.
JAZZERATLARGE Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Just to let you know, I'm Rich Haering. Vaughn Nark stopped being the lead Trumpet in 1986 when Bruce Gates was hired. In 1989 they hired me and I held the lead chair until 1999. I was playing Lead for this show.
trumpetXbml Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Then you bear one hell of a striking resemblance to a younger Vaughn :PI stand corrected :)
enlitened1234 Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Why isn't Vaughn playing on this chart...not enough parts??Also if he were the lead player would he not be in the center of the section??
Jmuduke Says:
Nov 18, 2008 - Dang, he's still a monster!
