Jul 7, 2008 - In my dreams I could write like him! I love his live readings - the pauses and inflections. It's a style that we rarely hear except on shows like "This American Life". Storytelling seems like a lost art because we are so conditioned to in-your-face standup. I spit coffee all over the table at Borders when I read 6-8 Black Men the first time.

Jul 7, 2008 - whew. his book is much better than this. weak sauce :(

teleposkyy Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - he's so cool!

olivelivylover Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - He has such a distinctive voice, you can recognize it instantly.

JalousYet Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - :D I love it.I also love this particular essay

bloggerjoe Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Sedaris is a semi-closeted gay and most of his stories are written from the perspective of a gay male growing up in a straight household. YAWN... I am so tired of gays presenting us with the drama of growing up "different." Thank God for Dave Barry... because gay humor don't cut it.

pixelninja Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - I always thought he would look like Mo Rocca. Huh...

claudenorth2007 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Um...he's not closeted at all...

callbobloblaw Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Send this swill back to France where David Sedaris is undoubtedly enjoying a baguette.

rabidbeavir Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Sedaris is hardly a closeted homosexual, and a lot of his stories are auto-biographies. Most of his work is not really filled with any "drama." I'm sorry that all you saw in this delightful essay-reading was the homosexuality, especially since he didn't mention it once.

bloggerjoe Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - I was commenting on more than just this reading, as you were when you used the words "most of his work is..." I have here a copy of Me Talk Pretty One Day, and it is very much laced with the drama of his gay childhood. In fact, the first two entries are very much so. But taking the book as a whole, he cleverly strays just enough toward hetero territory to keep it saleable. That's why I say he is semi-closeted... But really, maybe he and Augusten Burroughs (nice name) should get a room.

kpgerhardt Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Does the laughter sound canned to anyone else?

morethansalt Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Duh? It's LETTERMAN, you know the motto of that show? "ALL CANNED, ALL THE TIME"

jorgekluney Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - People find this clown funny? He's just standing there reading his own shit. Read it yourselves. This numbnuts gets to stand there and read some of his own crap. That.... and he is not funny. It sounds like something people laugh at because they think they'll look smart and clever laughing at it. Sedaris sucks.

cubsfan430 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - sedaris is the most popular writer in america at the moment. refering to him as "clown" shows how incredibly out of touch you are. sad.

jorgekluney Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - So it's all a popularity contest with you?What a clownish approach.

rtfirefly0 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Humor is subjective. A lot of people find him very funny, other don't. Either reaction is valid.Sedaris first became known from delivering his essays on public radio, and he has a distinctive voice, strong mimicry skills and excellent comedic timing. It makes sense why people would want to see him read. What he's doing up there is similar to a comedian delivering material he's written, except Sedaris brought some notes. Normally the stories he reads aren't published yet.

rtfirefly0 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - That is not the definition of closeted. He has been perfectly open in his work and interviews for his whole career that he is gay. He regularly discusses his boyfriend. He has written about his current and former boyfriends and experiences dealing with his sexuality. By any accepted definition he is entirely out.You are not describing the closet. You're describing a person having life interests outside of his own sexuality, and consequently work content that covers a variety of subjects.

bloggerjoe Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Anybody who writes stories from the perspective of being gay (and you can't avoid that if you are truly gay), yet tries to make the stories appeal to a "wide" audience to increase sales, is inevitably doctoring the work to make it seem more heterosexual. His stories such as "You can't kill the rooster" and many others are a perfect example of this. When gay people do this sort of thing, straight people tend to call it "flying under the radar." That's why I say he is semi-closeted.

thefoxforever Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - soon to be LEGEND!!my hero for life!

joshpicasso Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - "semi-closeted"? thats silly. Just because he doesn't walk around in a pink summer dress with I'M GAY written accost it doesn't mean he's "semi-closeted". Your just upset because he doesn't fit exactly into your idea of "gay". As a result you feel the unnecessary need to ridicule him or, at the vary lest, create a new category. Perhaps he's just a person talking about his life from a comedic perspective. Maybe he's good at it. I happen to find him funny and insightful of the human condition. yep

sueezee Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Sadaris is fabulous. Read each of his books and laughed continually.

bloggerjoe Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Why don't you go iron your pink summer dress and remind yourself of how omniscient you are in the mirror. Even in this recital, he is talking about wearing an external catheter to a football game. I doubt that Sedaris attends many football games... unless he is checking out the quarterback's ass...

lozanogustavo Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - My dear homofobic poster, what part of "I don't attend football games" you didn't understand. Pay attention and maybe you would embarrass yourself a little less.CHEERS!

bloggerjoe Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - My dear know-it-all, omniscient, all-wise, condescending ass-stuffer:You simply illustrated my point. Sedaris does not know anything about a lot of the stuff he tries to write about. He likes to "blur" the lines between a hetero and a homo point of view, just enough to keep the hetero audience buying his books.
