He was sentenced to death for raping and stabbing Pamela Moseley Carpenter who died of her wounds. His lawyer claims that he has the reasoning capability of a 7-year old. His death sentence has been overturned three times by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1988, 2001 and 2006.
