Jul 7, 2008 - I like gov't mule's cover of this song
Lysystra Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - This is so much better than White Stripes.JackWhite prolly doesnt even know who 'John The Revelator' is, let alone sing about him.Dumb people always try to push their own generation's artist. Especially if the guitars have more distortion or the artist is "hot." But not because they're actually better. Jack white is not even the beginning of a pimple on Son House's ass.
ezzthemc Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - LOL. I think your being a little unfair even though I'm inclined to agree with you on this.
brentlayzee Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - I'm a blues man and for Lysystra to say Jack White doesn't know the blues is fuckin' wrong! Without his remakes and his improvisation of old lyrics, then most people wouldn't know shit about this song...much less the great Blind Willie Johnson...The lyrics and subject matter Jack uses are simply "modern day" blues...You tell me "Little Cream Soda" or "Icky Thump" couldn't be song titles from the 30's...
big3klledmibaby Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - jack white WORSHIPS the blues. this is good. Jack will probably agree this is better. But dont say Jack White doesnt know the blues. His legends are Blind Willie and Son House. Come on people. so sensitive. He pays tribute to them. and yes he knows who they are. so i suggest u shut up until u know what ur talking about
briandillon120 Says:

shrunkenhead145 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - gov't mule's version of this on the deepest end with the dirty dozen brass band absolutely KILLS. the horns get this real mean mingus-sounding arrangement to play with, it's great. and to lysystra - i don't think comparing jack white to the old bluesmen is a fair or even worthwhile comparison to make. he's doing a different thing, but he's coming out of the blues with it. Just like every successful rock artist, ever. And yes, he does know who John the Revelator is, he performs this song live.

Jul 7, 2008 - You can get the entire recorded output of Blind Willie from Amazon for a few quid. Best value double CD I ever bought!

jessupar Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - "Jack white is not even the beginning of a pimple on Son House's ass."best thing i've ever heard right there. just because he plays the music dosnt mean shit. As the late great Son said himself, "the blues isnt the music, it's just this" and proceeded to talk about when a woman lies to you and decieves you with love.Jack is a sellout. the blues isnt about money. Son gave it up to be a Preacher for christ sakes. lets see jack give up his millions for a bible, fat chance.
caulderock Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - my "legends" are Son House and Miles Davis... that doesn't say shit about my knowledge of blues or jazz music...jack white will latch onto any relevant artist he can for street cred..if Nina Simone was to resurrect herself tomorrow, he'd cover Strange Fruit.
AKCrowley Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - theirs a bar named after him i used to go to in Statesboro GA...bLIND wILLIES!!
almanacofsleep Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Jack White is white and so there for can never have the same experience that African Americans had, and so there for can never play the Blues, there is so much cultral things you need to be born into.
trinitysams Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - great song, full of soul.
JimiXpresion Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - The reason Jack White won't be able to play the blues,is due to lack of pain and strong experiences, not because he is white.Blues is about crying out your strong feelings of pain in some sort of way.To do so, you don't have to be black. It just happend that this whole mood started from these Afro-American people.Let's just not lose our heads about color-skin issue!!!
almanacofsleep Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Well there is a lot of things about blues that is afican, like its style, culture and so much more that is instricly afican american, its something you need to be born into.
JosephNScott Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - If you want to know if Jack White really understands blues music, ask him if we have any recordings of Blind Willie Johnson performing blues music.
JimiXpresion Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - About that, I can tell you Jack sure have records Blind Willie Johnson because according to a discussion between him and Jimi Page about the blues on GuitarWorld magazine 2years ago, there were many references to B.W.Johnson and other "first founders" of blues if I may say.Jack is sure a good "digger" of blues. He kind of modulated blues into his own unique way.I respect that.
JosephNScott Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Hi JimXpresion,My point was that, as Jack White probably knows, we don't have any recordings of Blind Willie Johnson performing blues music. Guitar gospel was a popular style among "black" record buyers and audiences in the '20s-'30s(alhough most guitar gospel performers are very little-remembered today), and Blind Willie Johnson performed gospel material.
