It's a view into the schizophrenia and paranoia of the protagonist. His "real I" doesn't fit the society, so he started to build up a new personality, the "social him", to be able to live in this world and maybe to finally find his love. But in this personality he's unable to feel anything, the world loses its color. A little comment I want to add from "DeafDumbBlindMute" on songmeanings.net:"Also, the word monochrome sums it up you know? The same color in different shades - Black, White, and Gray. Black and White being two colors that are often seen as opposites but in this case they are just different shades of each other...again the schizophrenia. Last time I checked Youtube, I couldn't find it...it's awesome you put it up :) I just love her voice and how it fits against the background music/sound effects.I have to make a comment on the lyrics - the part where she sings "Who taught you emotions?" seems to be a schizophrenic duet-challenge.
