Yehudi Menuhin plays "Chaconne" By J.S.Bach. Gstaad 1972. Introduced by Ivry Gitlis. This was recorded off ABC TV Australia a number of years ago. From an excellent documentary called "The Art Of Violin: The Devil`s Instrument" NVC Arts/Warner Arts Nov 2001. Director Bruno Monsaingeon. I Believe it`s part of an "Art Of" series possibly commissioned by PBS in America. There are companion docos "The Art Of The Piano", "The Art Of Singing" and two "The Art Of Conducting" from the same series and production company. I haven`t seen the ones about Singers or Conductors but both the Violin and Piano documentaries are glorious. Highly recommended.

Oct 8, 2008 - It is probably important to interpret J S Bach in general who was a devout protestant and understood how to express the awe of God. -- I most appreciate Yehudi Menuhin's interpretation of "Chaconne" which is heavenly and passionate. I feel that other artists play this too mechanically.

Oct 8, 2008 - I think that was absolute genius. I saw Heifetz play the same song and didn't feel the closeness that you feel with Yehudi Menuhin. So special.

Oct 8, 2008 - Amongst all of the horror and tragedy in the world, this music... there is hope and beauty in the world. I sometimes wonder if the bad people would be so bad if they heard and appreciated and related to music like this. They don't need to express their anger through crime etc., they could get comfort and solace from music like this. But what can you do? Just be glad we're alive AFTER Bach, Mozart, Beethoven etc., who proportionally are so recent... how did people live before music like theirs?

Oct 8, 2008 - No one comes close to this...the Chaconne in D Minor than Menuhin.

Oct 8, 2008 - I have been hunting for a long time for an interpretation that is impassioned, but most I found, as other put it, was mechanical. Not to say that they were bad. After all, this is a demanding piece. But this requires the ability to move the listeners. This performance captures the essence of Bach's piece.Too bad it's too short.

Oct 8, 2008 - What a beautiful performance...I too would love to see the complete recording. I note that Menuhin was one of the few violinists to play a duet with Glenn Gould, a fact which makes me want to hear his Bach recordings for that reason alone.
