He tried to be an R&B bassist in R&B bands.He could not lay down a monster groove like the Black cats, so he upped the anti technically & developed an awesome fretless/harmonic technique.Phrasing so beautiful few (especially white dudes) noticed he could never lay down a groove i.e. Marcus,Anthony,Graham or Rainey.Even Jaco admitted all of this.
