Eccentric chemist Sidney Stratton (Alec Guinness) has been working on an experiment in a textile mile that will have unforeseen consequences in director Mackendrick's 1951 adaptation of Roger MacDougall's satirical play. Produced by the famous British Ealing Studios, "officially the oldest film studio in the world" and known at the time for their "common man" against the establishment productions. Here Guinness is at his wacky best, playing a brilliant chemist whose obsessive experiementing with his employers' laboratory equipment funds has him continually being fired. When he miraculously invents a fabric that never wears out or needs cleaning, instead of becoming a hero, he draws the wrath of both business and labor.

Oct 11, 2008 - Great scene from an amazing film, this was one of the fist of alec's movie's i'd seen. though i did know who he was, it wasn't until I found some of his old ealing studio comedies at the library that i really discovered what a genius he was.
