Oct 8, 2008 - sublime! haven't heard this track for years . .. but it' still as fresh now as ever!

stringrip Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - He's playing Roland guitar modified for Synclavier synth . The makers of Synclavier would only guarantee their product if Roland guitar was used as controller. Synclavier was very expensive , weighed hundreds of pounds and had big cable.

rustedtractor Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - extreme phasing betwixt guitarsynth and sax at 3:18 but what a great find, thanks for uploading this.

Oct 8, 2008 - was'nt the synclavier/roland gtr synth rolands answer 2 the synthaxe? i remember that one of the thing critics did'nt like about it was it sounded too synthy which ironicly the synthaxe can sound just as synthy. i remember reading about the gtr synth and wondering why the critics could'nt just listen to the phrasing and they could tell the difference. i was about 12 or 13 at the time so i kinda had that kid logic going.

marc777danielle Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - yeah i thought so! i had this album so when i saw that cobham was'nt in the vid i thought i was having a brain fart.

stringrip Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - The synthaxe didn't have real strings . The company went out of business . Allan Holdsworth ,who sold a house to get the cash to buy a Synthaxe now has stopped playing it because there is no one to fix it if it breaks down. On the Album John's Synclavier sounded good , but on the Montreux video it sounded like a weak keyboard.

stringrip Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - Billy Cobham was on the album , but at the last moment McLaughlin decided to use Danny Gottleib instead on the subsquent concert tour. Cobham wanted to have a say in musical direction and writing but John wanted to be the only leader . So it may have been because of politics about that.

marc777danielle Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - yeah. i've also heard allan say that it was quite difficult to control (the synthaxe that is) which i don't understand.

smenasche Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - guitar sounds like shit.

wanker6957 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - its not a guitar its a guitar synthesizer.stick to the corporate side of the fence dork.

IsaacIsaiahMusic Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - It sounds shit whatever it is! Really CHEESY, Cheap sounds. Sounds like a shitty rainforest healing album mixed with the MASH soundtrack. The only really good stuff John McLaughlin did is with Miles Davis on Live Evil and Bitch's Brew. This is truly dire!

wanker6957 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - never heard of...My Goal's BeyondShaktiQue Alegriahuh?yeah, you really know your shit there buddy**rolls eyes**

SEMICHUCK Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - is that jonas on bass?

IsaacIsaiahMusic Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - Shakti are OK sometimes. But there's far too much playing scales and arpeggios (rather than melodies) and the constant doubling of instruments is mostly just showing off. Indian music is more curved (not staccato), and there's more development of melody (raga). Most of McLauglin's bends are used on the tail of a scale/arpeggiated run to 'Indianize' it. (dagadagadagadaga -bend). Anyway, you ARE allowed to criticize these people you know! They are not holy or infallible. Look what happened to...

IsaacIsaiahMusic Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - Stevie Winwood: If he'd died in the early 70's he'd probably still still have some respect. Miles Davis' "Doo Bop" shit is another example. These people can get it wrong. And this is dead WRONG! Cheesey sounds are the result of a lack of natural richness and authenticity in sound, coupled with musical clichés. This 'smoothy-smoothy' sax as well, it's one step up from Kenny G. What's next slap bass? I can't listen anymore. Since I dedicate my life to music (mostly), I probably do know my shit.

wanker6957 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - ok ok. i can definitely dig where you are coming from now. i just thought you might be one of those trolls just looking to knock fusion for the sake of it. honestly, i am not nearly the mclaughlin fan i once was. would rather listen to Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny, Allan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson or the likes. more melodic and soulful to my ears. hell even jeff beck or david gilmour does it more for me lately. as far as "selling out", there are some artists who can actually pull it off.

freejazzfree Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - although i agree that this version of 'm.o.' isnt my fav.. we must remember the 80's in general were kinda shit. and.. this is still your subjective opinion.i think that shakti has lots of beautiful melodies as well as some serious playing. i dont think that mclaughlin had any intention of trying to play straight up indian music. his phrasing and melodic ideas are only slightly affected by the context. you dont know everything.. everyone has different taste.. get over yerself

IsaacIsaiahMusic Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - I do believe I can be sure to an extent. If I had shit taste, then the greatest music in history would also have to be shit. Also, there are the opinions of such musicians that later I discover correspond to my own. The reason I comment on YouTube is because I really want to know what people like and why. Maybe the shit stuff has reasons other than the music (i.e. being over-impressed by virtuosity, some attraction to the performer or scene, nostalgic associations, etc). And it seems... YES!

laguitarrita14 Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - Alto tema, 5 estrellas,de la legendaria banda.

harmono Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - Well I just can't agree with this. I think you guys are over analyzing it. It's just a tune, and although you pointed out the similarities to MASH, you gotta realise that MASH is not really all that crappy of a song. Look where the melody goes, and how it has different sections. They develop that MASH type theme. My only disappointment is that they just stopped jamming when it was going somewhere.

4oust Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - well i just want to cry its so sad but beautiful

n2motocross Says:

Oct 8, 2008 - I love that Roland Synth guitar!!same one Pat Metheny uses!!

Oct 8, 2008 - After watching this video I now understand Path Metheney.

Oct 8, 2008 - saw this lune-up live at the North Sea festival and they were steaming, I mean steaming... Still, it's a faint shadow of the real MO of the early 70's
