Many Irishmen fought on the Union side in the American Civil War. We kept it going. Some on the South side as well but not as many because most of the Irish immigrants went to Northern Cities. Paddy's Lamentation music video by me :D

Sep 5, 2008 - I'm an American from deep rooted Irish decent.(like so many others) I feel, that is, what the Irish imagration, was truely about.

saxonenglish Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - "It was a wise crack wingnut" Ha very wise indeed your such a dumb fucker. The US used French mercenaries to fight for them and the British still won most of the battles! the American colonial campaign was abandoned for monitary reasons, Dip shit! and by the way the declaration hadn't been signed at that point so it was British fighting British. It seems i know more about the "American" part of your heritage than you do. You sad Wankers don't even have your own language!

saxonenglish Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - childMoless666..Not only did the British bring civilization to the colony of America but we gave you your language, democracy, banking system, culture, the colours of your flag, laws, rail system, electricity, telephones, refrigerators, light bulbs. Infact if it wasn't for the British, Americans would still be the Trogladytic race of inbred, instesuous, primative savages they were when we found them.

Sep 5, 2008 - Whatever you have to tell youself so you can feel better. Of course two of my grandfathers that fought in the revolution came from Ireland and gave your people a little lead kiss.Lost many battles? Yes. Won the war? Of course. No longer under British rule? Hell no.Remenber Cornwallis! Ya know the British General officer who would not show his face in surrender. What a fag.Farwell Sexwithenglish, I'm done with this little war of words.

childress66 Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - The songis well done here. The clips are from Cold Mountain and Gangs of New York. The only thing good about either was the Battle of the Crater in Cold Mountain. The real Irish Brigade rocked. But remember thet most states had Irish regiments, they just didn't make a single brigade. The 10th Tennessee Inf. (C.S.) and the 35th (1st Irish) Indiana Inf. are two good books to read about Irish soldiers.

Sep 5, 2008 - kiss my. when will we stand in the sun?

Torgue15 Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - When the English bring "civilization" to a land that usually means they bring genocide and oppression to whatever indigenous people already live there.

legacyxlove Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - i love this song.i'm half-irish.erin go bragh!

GettysburgGhost1863 Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - Proud Irishman! Erin go bragh!

boomachine1 Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - you guys need to stop with the 'pride' bullshit.every country has blood has its flag. you cant be proud of some selective things. you need to take responsibility for the bad things too.so STFUthe brits gave civilization??????do you mean death and destruction (small pox infected blankets) ??????????

FibaBall Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - why so many people hate the irish, especially in the time of the civil war, like gangs of new york movie?

Sephiroth3003 Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - truth be told, most Irishmen who lived in the states before the war began fought for the Confederacy. and with good reason. They identified the South's fight against the North with their own struggle for independence from the British. The Irish who fought for the Union did so because they were promised safe haven from the potato famine, and as soon as they were given citizenship, they were conscripted. Honestly, their is no just side in the American Civil war. It all depends on what race you are

laxhockey22889 Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - Similarly to the present hatred of Mexican immigrants in the United States. Irish immigrants were mostly unskilled workers who worked for low wages and were also different from the majority of Americans (as they were Catholic). They were looked on with suspicion and hatred because of this.

heliodor001 Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - You can't blame everything on the Brits. In many cases during Irish history, the Irish were their own worst enemy. That being said, western civilization owes much to the Irish.

karlgeiran2 Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - Well done on the this piece. The Irish were a nation that was surpressed from so long that the only thing they could do when they left Ireland was to fight they knew no other way and they did . They to like the Brits have they faults and that to should be noted not just their side of pain and misery.

Svartfrukt Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - Just a slight correction on the decription to the video: It was not that the Irish went to Northern cities and then moved down to the south, The City of Savannah, Georgia was actually the 2nd largest port of immigration in North America next to New York City. So the "Rebel Irish", and other immigrant groups (Germans, Swiss, Italians etc.) were more likely to have immigrated through Savannah.

SteviesLastTry Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - what movie are these clips from? anyone please

siouzy Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - cold mountain

SteviesLastTry Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - thanks a bunch

ungelbertpendo Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - more irishmen fought for british forces than for american forces, more than 270,000 in the first have of the 20th century but they were never honoured or thanked

liamfoley Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - So what? Britain is geographically closer to Ireland, and as for honor, you are not up on current events.

ungelbertpendo Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - "not up on current events"we may not be in iraq or afghanastan but did you not even notice the lisbon treaty or the fact that ireland was the only country that gave their people a choice and millions of people are thanking ireland for the no vote??

liamfoley Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - I was referring to the assertion that Irish men who fought in the British army have not been honored, this is not so there have been several memorials uncovered both in Ireland & Belgium.

liamfoley Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - A great difference between the Irish who fought for the Americans and those who fought for the british is that the Irish Catholics were trusted by the Americans. There were several Irish born generals on both sides in the US Civil war. Even in WW1, the last time substantial numbers of Irishmen fought for the British, the southern Irish were not permitted their own division like the Ulster protestants, neither were they permitted their own corps of officers. My grandfather was a Munster fusileer.

liamfoley Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - Another great port of entry for the Irish in the United States was New Orleans. In fact it is debatable wether more Irish entered through New Orleans or Savannah.
