Here's a rare video of Jaco and Jeff Berlin at MI in 1985. The bass Jaco used was lent by Greg Wilson, a student there at the time. According to Greg, Jaco showed up for the performance without a bass... and the rest is history.

May 14, 2008 - To express great ideas, only four strings are needed

atoznumbers0to9 Says:

May 14, 2008 - who needs bass guitarists? It's fun man. But listen to some Berlin say with Holdsworth, he's solid and knows how to support melody too. This is for fun and for other musicians who dig it.

atoznumbers0to9 Says:

May 14, 2008 - six2112 try listening to Berlin with Holdsworth (Road Games album), if you still think he's boring then he's just not your thing. Jaco and Berlin are two very different players at the highest end of the field. Some like Jaco better and I for one wouldn't fault you for it (I prefer Berlin).

boztnskydvr Says:

May 14, 2008 - nobody will ever come close to jacos tone....as fukd up as jaco was, he still sounded bettr carrying the bottom than berlin sounded masturbating with 16th notes.....

PilferMusic Says:

May 14, 2008 - Jeff Berlin is a great player... I love the stuff he did with Bill Bruford & Kazumi Watanabe... [{never heard of them? git some learning :) }]

CraigPalmer Says:

May 14, 2008 - So boooorrring! Just two blokes wanking their instruments!

mileslark Says:

May 14, 2008 - dude shut up jeff and jaco are amazing

CraigPalmer Says:

May 14, 2008 - Just like Vai or Satriani are amazing! Sounds like a random mess. Just because they can play super fast it doesn't make them gods like people portray them to be, it's music for snobs. Give me Harmony and Melody over this tripe.

mileslark Says:

May 14, 2008 - listen to them two great bass masters playing you cant deny them anytihng and music for snobs, jaco played bass for everybody including steve vai, dude your oveiously not a musician if you were you would understand jaco and jeff

lexsadler Says:

May 14, 2008 - i can appreciate the tecnhique but to me it sounds like someone throwing a piano down a flight of stairs

joserock31 Says:

May 14, 2008 - dude, it's obeiously that you don't know nothing about music. Know? You suck and your mother tooXD!

95noro Says:

May 14, 2008 - Jaco was the person who popularized Jazz Fusion& harmonics, Jeff has the fastest fretting and plucking hands, Victor has the best percussive&rhythmic technique, Sheehan shreds like no other. I guess you guys just dont have the right to hate on these peepz...

champylolaball Says:

May 14, 2008 - chill music man

Wyldephang Says:

May 14, 2008 - I love them both, but Jeff Berlin's solo in "Water on the Brain Pt. 2" is probably one of my favorite bass solos ever, even above most of Pastorius' recorded solos.

yta314159 Says:

May 14, 2008 - Berlin is an egotistical prick, without Jaco's skill, musicality, orcreativity. Berlin spends his life believing he compares to Jaco'sincredible creativity, as epitomized here with Berlin thinking he upsJaco by playing fast. My computer plays better bass then Jeff Berlin,my computer can't come close to Jaco. These two are in differentleagues: Berlin the IBM PC, and Jaco the bass da Vinci. Why doesBerlin even say he plays bass, rather he plays deep guitar poorly.

Avant Says:

May 14, 2008 - shut up Fag!

thegreatsamwise9 Says:

May 14, 2008 - hes an egotistical prick who plays bass well. hes not close to jaco, but hes still good

selmoco Says:

May 14, 2008 - mileslark, I agree w what y say. Many great musicians have hard-core fans...Well, I'm a MUSIC fanatic. Many of us don't dig the so-called "progressive" genre (still I don't know its meaning), but take a look at Berlin in theBruford 1979: he's a great musician, and Idon't like 2 compare him to someone else...

Gratefulphish334 Says:

May 14, 2008 - Those are sume harsh words for Berlin. Nice video, not a great tune (if it is a tune), but cool to see them play together. So Jeff Berlin is egotistical? I thought Jaco introduced himself to people as "the best bassist in the world". Jeff Berlin must be a HUGE prick then if what you say is true.

aballballball Says:

May 14, 2008 - be nice to jeff, he probably still lives in the basement of his mommy's house.
