Story of The F6F "Hellcat." The USN's main fighter in 1941 was the F4F "Wildcat." The "Wildcat" had real difficulty tangling with the highly maneuverable A6M "Zero." The F6F was a great shock to the Japanese. spencnaz Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - That 'smile' is the intake for the oil coolers, carburetor and intercoolers.

Kahless02 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - at 1:09, when they show the F6F taking off of an aircraft carrier, you can clearly see a "6" on the deck. That is the last of the Yorktown Class carrier, the USS Enterprise CV-6

Jul 7, 2008 - This is the history channel??? LOL so hilarious, this is more like a heroic action movie from hollywood! This can´t be meant serious! Do the americans learn this stuff in school?

Jul 7, 2008 - If you know both yourself and your enemy, you can come out of hundreds of battles without danger. Sun Tzu: The Art of War

jabberjaw7 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Apparently PicDickson has a better understanding of these historic events then the people who experienced them and the researchers who put this show together. Who knew? Seriously, a truly amazing and innovative series from the history channel.

PicDickson Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - I don´t have a better understanding of any historic event except of the things which happened in my life. I havent´t been there, I never flew a hellcat and I´ve never faced war.Don´t twist my conclusion buddy. I just criticized this shitty way of pseudo-science.This is so lame and has nothing to do with research about history.

PicDickson Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Awesome and feared hell cat pilots whipping out the sky of any enemyairplane. And the attack on the japanese cruiser is ridiculous. That hellcat didn´t even harmed that cruiser. You don´t seem to understand what I am talking about jabberjaw. The style of this video is so bad that I cant find words to describe how anoyed I am.

goodfella21f Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Nope, we learn how we burned a bunch of krauts in Dresden and other Kraut cities. How our mighty bombers burn to a crisp all those German scum civilians on the ground. "Do the Americans learn this stuff in school?" typical European fuckin idiot.

Byos4902 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Why do you say this? Is there something that is false in this video?

salemcripple Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Is there one on the corsair?

RightToFly787 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - History truly made a work of art on this documentary "Dogfights".Turly amazing, keep on going History.

cornergasser Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - I believe some naval-fans have pointed out that there have been unsubstantiated claims, some outright disproven by the US itself 60 years ago like the sinking of the Kumano, or destroyers represented as capital ships etc. I know RCAF Squad 418 had members angry they were censored out by the series for correcting it on Luma's Mosquito claims(not all in same mission as claimed)& 'unjust misrepresentation of historical proportion' as aired. So yes, the series does make mistakes & censors critics.

DukeTrueGrit Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Work of art is best thing u can say about "Dogfights" who's had the default NPOV for documentaries removed by global forums like Wikipedia. Beside the term 'condescending' now added to negative descriptions for choice of American rather than 1 of many far higher scoring Cdn/Brit Aces for RCAF Mosquito + "wrongs" about Mossie lacking radar at the time. Other wrongs include Fw190A8 range, armament and it being the most dangerous Luftwaffe fighter at the time & no foe corroboration of some stories.

Jul 7, 2008 - Whoa! Rabaul was on Nov. 11! The anniversary of WW1.

Jul 7, 2008 - germans only got a taste of what the US did to japan with the invention of napalm...

Jul 7, 2008 - And did they both deserve it.

rustyATV Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - That Zero they captured; isn't it still flying today, the only example with it's original engine? There are clips on here, and it's wild to hear it run; it sounds like a toy compared to the American radials, but what a bastard it was!
