Oct 7, 2008 - both streets jag around inner city parks and the corners are pretty similar. montreal around cranmer sq and madras around latimer sq. the shot of the RAV4 squeezing this chap out is madras st at latimer sq, a diabolical corner.

Oct 7, 2008 - This video is misrepresenting cyclists. I see more bad cyclists than motorists (ratio wise). Riding a meter out from the curb, or two abreast (yes it's legal, but should it be?) which slows traffic to 15km/h (if you're lucky) or forces cars into oncoming traffic. Then there is the rows of 10 riding two abreast (in rush hour, they can't all be going to work). For a REAL example of a cyclist search 'Bike ride through Christchurch city' why don't they show that in the news? Oh, that's the media.

ed061 Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - The worst drivers/cyclists I know are the ones who think they ought to be able to do anything they like, as long as it's technically 'within the law'. These people should realise that there's alot more to good driving than that. The cyclist who made this video should attend a 'defensive cycling course'. This is not a personal dig, but some serious advice.Btw, I'm not saying there weren't some cases of bad driving in these clips either. The guy towing the car - a bloody moron!

Zerthic Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Anyone notice the mazda at the end was indicating out, that the cyclist passed very narrowly? The cyclist wouldnt've needed to wait for the car to pull out, as soon as it had started to move there would be room on the other side. It'd also make things a bit clearer if what was going on behind the bike was shown too.

tygertung Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - The amount of motorists who shouldn't be on the road is amazing. Cutting off cyclists and motorcylists 'oh i didn't see you' maybe you should open your eyes. Everyone should have to do 6 months on a bike around town before getting their licence.

djspirate Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Yesterday I had to help a small boy who was hit by a car which came speeding out of a driveway between 3:00-3:30 knocked the poor kid flying totalled his bike then did a runner as soon as adults were seen running to help. This driveway is located between TWO schools! and the driver was to chicken to man up to what he/she had done.

Oct 7, 2008 - get a horn for your bike. one of those gas powered ones that the sheeple parp at rugby and cricket games

sumokiwi Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Great idea. I like it. Pisses me off the amount of people sitting in there cars alone driving 3 or 4 k to work every morning. Just lazy asses.

superkiwiwoman Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - lol. i bike bout 6 miles to work, and i have huge 18 wheelers go past me all the time, and i've lost count as to how many of them come close enough to kill me... i would LOVE to see some of these drivers bike, and see how they fair against cars and trucks...

u2newzooland Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Nice video. I prefer to bike to work than drive in Christchurch, I agree there are some silly cyclists but man I've had some ****heads in motorvehicles too. Also seen some pretty good altercations when a driver cuts somebody off, and if my life ever gets put in danger by DANGEROUS driving, I don't mind kicking a rearview mirror or adding a nice key scratch to their car.

superkiwiwoman Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - lol CLASSIC!i think that riding two abreast should be outlawed too, cuz some people just aren't made for biking side by side (me being one of these idiots)but then, christchurch has the luxury of bike lanes! here in georgia, USA, we don't have those... riding anywhere past about 2 feet from teh gutter is suicide -- no freakin joke...

fifieyfatin Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - my heart my heart pines to go to Aotearoa

marsh808 Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - christchurch have a real problem, maybe its new zealanders altogether. a lot of people think they own the road. a lot of people forget there are other drivers. because you drive a 4x4 on the street doesnt mean you deserve to be first. you people are so rude!!! grow a soul. cyclists! you loose lots of respect by riding closer to the centre of the road then to the pavement, forcing drivers to move onto or past the centre line. how can you be sure everyone sees you? dont cycle where cars drive!!

geoave Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - My respect is to the lane control folks- their are much more visible and have lower crash risk.

blobbles2 Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - The fact is quite clear that cars need to be more aware of cyclists. Why?Price for a cyclist being run over by a car = death/serious maiming.Price for a car being run over by a cyclist = dented car.If you are driving 1-5 tonnes of steel/rubber and oil that is helping to destroy the planet, you should certainly have to pay some price for your laziness. If that means looking out and even giving way to cyclists - that's definitely a cost you should bare.

blobbles2 Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - What a moron. What about a 10 year old kid buddy? Should they be going your recommended 30kmph?What a moronic comment.

naptic Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - its 30k down the main in dunedin.

richyrich247 Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Riding a meter out from the curb is both legal and the safest place for a cyclist in trafic. If you have ever read the book called Cyclecraft: Skilled Cycling Techniques for Adults by John Franklin you will know this is the primary cycling position. When cars overtake a cyclist they have to leave as much room as they would if overtaking a car as stated in the highway code. Is this done NO. Get your facts right Zerthic so what if a car has to wait a few seconds to overtake safely.

Zerthic Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - There's no need to pass a car on normal in-town roads, they don't move at such laid back speed, therefore there isn't room for it, especially with traffic coming the other way. How exactly is it safer to be further away from the curb than closer to it?

Ericwillems23 Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Riding close to the curb encourages drivers to overtake you without changing their course (is that correct English? I'm French), thus putting you at risk. Riding further away from the curb forces drivers to wait till they have enough room.

PanoramicaNZ Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Thx for posting this - I feel yr pain! I moved to Dunedin from Wgtn a year ago. The drivers are far worse down here - it's like many of them have never seen a sub/urban cyclist before!I don't drive a car, but I suspect that many of the close calls are down to drivers not being able to judge how fast cyclists are travelling, so they see a gap where there isn't one. Maybe there needs to be some education here, eg if the cyclist is <5 car-lengths away, then wait for them to pass before turning?

lamelamez Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Bikers shouldnt even BE on the road. use the pavement.

sumokiwi Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - Dicks like you should not be allowed of your house. Not even on the pavement

littlepixik Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - people like you should be neutred at birth :P

numba1jollz Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - fuck you lamelamez. i fully understand what your on about. I've been living in christchurch since february this year, and a couple of months ago i was hit by a bus. bastards. think they own the road.
