Oct 7, 2008 - Drifting has existed ever since cars had enough torque going to the back wheels to break them loose in a turn.Competitive drifting as we know it started with Japanese racing on mountain passes (touge battles). Nobody did anything quite like that before, plain and simple. Oversteer happened in racing before, but was avoided (like in every other kind of racing) and certainly wasn't what the driver was TRYING to do like in touge racing.

But there is a difference between doing a burnout...and drifting. and competitive drifting didnt start on the "touge". It was Kunimitsu Takahashi that did it in the elegant Nissan Skyline GT-R of the old times. so people the age of our mom's and dad's were the starters of the sport of drifting. PS...people that argue that drifting started with muscle cars: Kunimitsu Takahashi raced before the first mustang was ever made)
